Monte Cristo Sandwich

Copycat Disneyland’s Monte Cristo Sandwiches! Yummy swiss cheese, turkey, and ham on white bread, fried & topped with powdered sugar—making it an irresistible sweet and salty dish everyone loves.

If you know me at all, you know how much I love Disney. And especially, how much I love Disney’s FOOD! I have a few Disney copycat recipes on the site, including hand-dipped corn dogs, mint juleps, and Dole Whips! This recipe is another favorite.

We love to go to Disneyland as a family, and not only to enjoy the fun rides and atmosphere, but also to enjoy the food. We love trying all the different goodies they have there, and one of our favorites is the Monte Cristo Sandwich that you can get at Cafe Orleans and Blue Bayou in Disneyland.

So, what is a Monte Cristo Sandwich? A Monte Cristo is a fried ham and cheese sandwich that is a variation of the French classic Croque Monsieur sandwich. It’s more savory than sweet but with the powdered sugar on top it does have a bit of sweetness that takes it to the next level. It’s often served with a raspberry sauce to enhance the sweetness.

With or without the sauce, this sandwich is OUT OF THIS WORLD. It’s definitely on our “must-have” list when we visit Disney. And fortunately for you guys, they’re so easy to make!

Like I said, these sandwiches are very easy to make. They can be made in a deep fryer or in a pan with oil, and call for some basic ingredients. Here is how you make them:

BATTER. To make batter, sift together flour, baking powder and salt. In separate bowl, mix water and egg. Add egg mixture to flour mixture and blend thoroughly.

ASSEMBLE. Make sandwiches, placing 1 slice of cheese between 1 slice of turkey and 1 slice of ham. Cut sandwiches in half and put in a toothpick to hold the sandwich together.

FRY. Dip in batter and fry in 360 degree oil until golden. Drain on paper towels. Remove toothpick and sprinkle with powdered sugar.

Can a monte cristo be fried in an air fryer? Yes, an air fryer is a great alternative. Preheat the air fryer to 350ºF. Line your basket with aluminum foil and spray with cooking spray. Air fry for 8-10 minutes. Flip the sandwich and fry for another 8-10 minutes. Remove and enjoy!

Raspberry Dip

There’s a really tasty raspberry dip that goes with these Monte Cristo sandwiches. It might sound crazy, but the sweet and savory combo is divine. Here’s how it’s made!

In a saucepan add:

  • ½ cup sugar 
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • ¼ cup cold water
  • ¼ cup lemon juice

Mix, then add 2 cups of fresh or frozen raspberries. At this point, add more sugar to taste if you want it sweeter. Bring to a boil. Continue to boil for 2 minutes, stirring constantly.

Variations. We haven’t really tried other variations of this recipe, but it would be easy to do. You can use different meats and cheese to change it up. At Cafe Orleans, they even serve an all cheese version which is so good and would be easy to do. Just layer several more slices of cheese instead of meat!

Freezing. Like most foods the Monte Cristo sandwich is best eaten right away. However, you can safely freeze it for 1-2 months to use later. Wrap each sandwich individually with plastic wrap then cover with aluminum foil. Label the contents, include the date.

To eat: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Remove the plastic wrap then rewrap the sandwich in the foil. Place in the oven and bake for 20-30 minutes. Remove the foil and broil the sandwich for 1-2 minutes on each side to get crispier crust. Top with powdered sugar and jam.

Reheat. If you have any leftovers, store the sandwiches in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days. We don’t recommend using a microwave to reheat. Use the stove top, toaster oven, or standard oven instead.

Now, I must warn you… it’s hard to eat more than 1 or 2 of these sandwiches because they are deep-fried and a little heavy, but they are so extremely good!! I’m anxious for you to try them out… especially if you’re already a fan of the Disneyland goodies. 🙂 Let me know what you think if you give them a go.

  3. Just a little addition……the first time I had a Monte Cristo was at a now defunct chain restaurant and they served it with a little cup of seedless raspberry preserves for you to dunk the sandwich! Lunch and dessert in one!

    1. They sell them at two places in New Orleans Square by Pirates…. one restaurant is the one inside Pirates called The Blue Bayou, and the other is the cafe right across the way… can’t think of the name at the moment. :/ They are so good!!

  5. I grew up eating these at my grandma’s house and they really are so delicious! She doesn’t fry them in oil though, just cooks them in a pan or on a griddle the way you would do French toast. Yum!

I’m not sure if they do it online but I know while dining in the Magic Kingdom a few years ago I asked for a recipe of what I was eating and within two minutes was handed a printout of recipes of the entire meal!

    One of my favorite memories of my one trip to Disneyland over 30 years ago (yikes that makes me feel old!) was eating at the restaurant by the Pirates of the Caribbean ride and having a minute cristo for the first time. No other version has ever measured up. These were sooo good and my family loved them!
