Creamy Garlic Penne Pasta

Super simple and delicious Creamy Garlic Penne Pasta recipe packed with flavor. This dish is perfect by itself or you can add chicken too!

This is one of our favorite white sauce pastas because it’s SO simple and easy! Whenever I crave a white sauce recipe, I also love to make chicken alfredo, pasta carbonara, or cheesy garlic tortellini.

Penne Pasta in Creamy Pasta Sauce in white bowl.

White Sauce Pasta

I LOVE pasta! I mean, who doesn’t?! Yes, it has carbs, but this girl needs it in her life because I cook with it ALL the time. In fact, now that I think about it, we usually have pasta at least once a week, whether it’s in salad form, or a main dish.

From Spaghetti to Fettuccine Alfredo,  pasta is something the whole family loves, so we have it quite often. This next recipe is another one of those dishes you can add to the meal plan, because it’s simple and definitely delicious.

This Creamy Garlic Penne Pasta is a white sauce pasta that is great on it’s own, but could be even heartier if you add chicken or another favorite meat.

If you like pasta dishes I would definitely try this one out. It’s super cheesy and has just the right touch of garlic and other spices making it another “go-to” dinner recipe!

Creamy Pasta Sauce in a skillet - a great white pasta sauce.

How to make white sauce

One of the main reasons we love this dish is because it’s simple and quick! You can make it start to finish in about 20 minutes. That’s my kind of dinner recipe! Just follow these easy steps to make this creamy pasta sauce which can be added to any pasta.

Cook Pasta. Begin by cooking the pasta according to the package instructions (we used penne).

Make Sauce. While pasta is cooking, melt butter in a medium sauce pan, add garlic and cook for 1 minute over medium heat. Add flour and cook for an addition minute, stirring constantly. Add milk and broth, stirring constantly. Cook until sauce boils and thickens. Add parsley and parmesan cheese, salt and pepper. Stir until cheese has melted.

Combine. Mix in pasta and serve immediately.

Tip: If you want your pasta to be extra cheesy, add 1/2-1 cup of your favorite shredded cheese (we like to use shredded Mozzarella or Parmesan).

Cooked Penne noodles in colander.

Change it up

Protein. There are so many things you can add to spruce up this delicious dish. Try adding meats such as grilled chicken, diced ham or shrimp.

Produce. You can also add produce such as halved cherry tomatoes, sliced sun dried tomatoes, asparagus, broccoli, bell peppers, or mushrooms.

Spice. To add a little heat, sprinkle on some red chili flakes.

What to do with leftovers

Storing. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-5 days.

Reheating. We typically reheat this pasta in the microwave, but this can also be done in a pot on the stove. You may need to add a little more broth if it’s too thick when reheating.

Freezing. If you plan to freeze this dish, leave the pasta undercooked as the freezing process will make thoroughly cooked pasta mushy. Store the cooked dish in a freezer safe airtight container for months.

To reheat, thaw in the fridge and reheat on the stove top stirring constantly to keep the cream base from curdling.

Just another quick, easy dinner meal! We hope you love this easy pasta dish.

  1. This looks like an incredibly delicious and simple dinner option. I love pasta, and often look for ways to change things up a bit. Thanks! -Victoria

  2. This looks great! I just have one question. Does it matter what type of milk you use?I only usually have 1 % milk. Thanks!

    1. Whole milk always seems to taste best but I don’t think there is much difference if you use 1% or 2 %. 😉

      1. Hi, every time i add the Flour to my butter it clumps up.. i stir constantly as directed. Whats going wrong?

        1. I wish I knew for sure. Your butter melted all the way first? It doesn’t have to be completely smooth, but it shouldn’t be too clumpy. You have it on medium heat?

This was fabulous. I came home craving pasta , but a very specific kind of pasta, and this hit the spot. It was so quick and was done at the same time as my noodles. I am thoroughly impressed ?

  3. 5 stars
I’ve made this twice already and both times it was great! The first time I added some veggies and the second time I threw in some veggies and shrimp. This is now on my list of dinners to make when I need something quick. I think my favorite thing is that I always have all of the ingredients on hand.

    1. Don’t you love simple and delicious recipes that you always have the ingredients on hand for?! And great idea to add veggies!

  4. 5 stars
I made this last weekend, tossed it with chicken, it was soooooo good! I’m making it again this weekend. We had enough left over for lunches for the week, too! Great recipe, thank you so much!

    1. Hi, Dawn! Thank you so much for sytopping by. Glad you liked this. Reminded me that I need to make it again soon too! Happy Thanksgiving!

  5. 5 stars
Very easy and delicious recipie! I’ve made cream sauces in the past that just didn’t work for me. This one worked great! I used powdered garlic (didn’t have fresh on hand), half and half cream as I was trying to use it up, and dill instead of parsley. Would go excellent with chicken!

      1. Hi Luna,

I just found this recipe and I plan to make this dish tonight! Since it’s just me, I probably will only cook half of the box of pasta…. would I need to scale back the ingredients if I do? Thanks!

        1. Just now seeing this. I would probably 1/3 the recipe for an individual size. 1/3 box, 1 TB butter, 1 tsp. garlic, 1 TB flour, 1/3 cup chicken broth, 1/3 cup milk, 1 tsp. parsley, 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese. 😉

  6. 5 stars
Hi! I’m from Europ and I’m not sure about tsp and TB.
Does it mean teaspoon and tablesoon?
    Thank you!!

  7. 5 stars
I found this recipe the other day on Pinterest and just made it tonight. I added a little more butter (because my family uses skim milk) and simmered all the ingredients a couple of minutes extra for each step.
This recipe was absolutely heavenly! It was really simple and super delicious!

  8. 5 stars
I usually don’t comment on any website. But this recipe is one of the best things I’ve ever eaten in my entire life!! It is so simple and doesn’t take a long time to do! I’ve done it like 5 times this month!

    1. Oh, I LOVE to hear that Beatrice!! It’s one of our favorites too. Definitely simple and so delicious. 😉

    1. I’m guessing you might have browned the flour too much. You really want a blonde (or slightly less) roux, so make sure you have your liquids ready before you add the garlic and flour. Adding the liquids is what will stop them from Browning.

      1. I agree, Chris. It probably burned a little. I like to have everything ready & I don’t leave it, once I’ve started, because it can, quick.

  9. 5 stars
Loved it! Added some fresh sliced baby Bella mushrooms. Turned out fantastic! Sure to be showing up on our table again. ????

Thanks for sharing this simple and delicious recipe! I added leftover chicken. Could have added some veggies too, but didn’t this time around.

    1. Chicken would be great in there!! It’s a great versatile recipe:) Thank you for trying this recipe!

    1. Of course, though I haven’t tried that. If you do, let us know what you used and how it came out! Thanks so much and enjoy!!

  11. 5 stars
This recipe is delicious! I made it for my husband tonight, however I did substitute Mozarella cheese for Parmesan. Thank you for the delicious recipe, it is going in our keeper file!

Made this recipe tonight for my husband and son and they absolutely loved it! This recipe was very delicious…!!???????????? Thank you.

    1. That is great!! I’m so glad they liked it. We love it! Thank you for giving it a try and of course, for letting me know 🙂

  13. 5 stars
this exceeded my expectations! yum! I used half a cup of whole milk and half a cup of half and half. I didn’t have broth, so I substituted white wine. I added salt and white pepper to taste. I also added a dash of garlic powder to taste, at the end, to emphasize the garlic flavor. I ate this on top of pasta with peas! tastes great with and without the peas mixed in the sauce. this was quick and easy to make. the sauce came together nicely. the consistency was very creamy. my only complaint is that my stomach isn’t big enough to eat more!

    1. LOL!! I am so glad you tried it and loved it!! I love the changes you made. I’ll have to try your way 🙂 Thanks so much for sharing!

  14. 5 stars
This is the first pasta recipe I have ever followed, in fact the first recipe in general I’m just learning to cook. I’m really happy I found this, the pasta was fairly easy to make, and tastes delicious 😀 Will definitely be cooking this when I go to uni next year, thank you for sharing!

    1. You are so welcome!! I am so glad you found it easy 🙂 I have tons of super easy & quick recipes, so keep checking back 🙂 Thank you!

  15. This really looks delicious that it made me crave for pasta. Off now to the grocery store to get some ingredients and try this.

    1. I personally haven’t tried, but it should 🙂 I would add a bit more sauce. Let me know what you think 🙂 Hope you like it!

  16. 5 stars
Loved this! Absolute heaven! I used stock and evap milk (not because I am fancy…it’s just all I had????). Thanks for this simple recipe…great for a busy mama!

  17. Hello
What kind of butter should I use when I cook pasta please? I’m Asian and I don’t usually use butter so I don’t know which one is good.
    Thank you.

    1. You don’t cook the pasta in butter. You cook them in boiling water, but you do start making the sauce with butter, 3 tablespoons. I just use cubed butter for that. Hope that helps!! Good luck!

  18. 5 stars
Oh my goodness, I just made this and it was soooooooo good! I added some red pepper flakes cause I can’t help myself and love a little spice in all my foods 😉 but hands down some of the best pasta I’ve had! Thank you 🙂

I loved it without but just for protein I added chicken breast!

  21. 5 stars
It was good, I have a big family i doubled up on the ingrinternets. I added a cup more of flour and a cup more of chicken broth. It thicken nicely.
4 out of 5 kids under 9yr liked it! But 5yr kid is going through a picky stage.
Over all we give it a thumbs up.

  23. 5 stars
Thanks for this great recipe! It’s so easy to make, especially since most of the ingredients are staples in my kitchen The only thing I did different was add peas and cubed ham. I followed the recipe exactly and I almost ate the whole thing myself!

  24. Hi Lil,

Thank you for sharing these wonderful recipes. I only signed up to your web site a few weeks ago and welcome your emails. I even made your recipe for Creamy Tomatoe Soup and it was Deeeeeelish!!!

  25. 5 stars
I don’t like to cook and I’m not very good at it but I love food! This recipe is the easiest white sauce recipe to make and it taste very, very good!! It only needs a few ingredients and once you begin cooking, it goes smoothly and fast. I highly recommend.

  26. Your recipes look great! I printed out some. I can’t wait to try some of them in the school cafeteria where I work. Thanks for sharing your recipes.

  27. 5 stars
I made this tonight. I added chicken, shrimp, red, yellow and orange peppers, mushrooms, a variety of different colored cherry tomatoes, brussels sprouts, broccoli, and asparagus. My family absolutely loved it!

  28. 5 stars
This was so delicious and easy to make. I had my young boys do most of the work after I prepped it. We added Italian sausage and served with lots of veggies on the side. We will most definitely make again. Thank you!

  29. 5 stars
I tried this recipe for the first time tonight and it was delicious. This will be in my rotation for sure. Thanks for sharing the recipe.

  30. 5 stars
This is good but I don’t know why milk was used instead of heavy cream to make the sauce. I of course made it with the cream. Better with the cream.

    1. Sometimes, when I am out of cream, I will use the milk. And, that is what happened for this recipe. But, both work great 🙂 Thank you for trying it!

  31. This recipe was not my favorite. It was very dry. I followed it step by step so I’m guessing something happened that went wrong but I’m not sure what. Everyone else said it was delicious so I not sure.

  32. 5 stars
Hi! I just made this today & cut everything to 50% since it’s just for 2 people. Half a box of pasta, 1.5 tb butter, 1 tsp minced garlic, 1.5 tb flour, 1.5 cup broth, 1.5 milk, 1 tsp parsley, and 1/4 cup parmesan cheese.

End result- it didn’t look like there was enough sauce for half a box of pasta. The sauce was only enough for maybe maybe.. 1/4 of the pasta.

Did I do something wrong? After I did step 4, the flour made the garlic/butter into little clumpy balls. So I added milk/broth which helped but there was not a lot of sauce to use. Any advice would help! I’m a total newbie in the kitchen.

BTW, the sauce is delicious! 🙂

    1. The flour does do that, but when you add the milk, it should get smooth. You have to stir constantly. I have never halved it, so I wish I knew about the sauce being enough. You would think it should be? I appreciate you trying it. You could always freeze half & reheat later:) Thank you for letting me know & I am glad that you liked the sauce. You are doing great..just keep at it 🙂

  35. 5 stars
I made this, and it was excellent! The only thing I tweaked a little, is, that I didn’t used as much garlic because my husband is picky. He loved it. Thanks for sharing.

  36. 5 stars
This looks ABSOLUTELY amazing! I do have a question though, is the chicken Broth optional? I don’t believe i have any on hand, but i would love to make this!

    1. I am sure it could be 🙂 I haven’t left it out, but I would substitute some liquid. It could be water or if you have chicken bouillon, I would mix that in with the water. You could use another broth, too, if you have others.

  37. 5 stars
My kids love pasta so i usually serve Sometype of dish each week. Sometimes we hAve pasta twice in a week! IM always on the look out for another reciPe to add to the rotatiOn. This one made the cut. My family loved it!

  39. 4 stars
I made this last night as a side dish. Fairly simple to make and tasty. a whole pound of pasta is too much for my family so i only prepared 8 oz. I still made the whole recipe for sauce. i used a little over half for the pasta and used the rest to pour over some roasted chicken breast. i only had 1% milk and was worried my sauce may not thicken up but it did just fine.

  40. 5 stars
made this last night and am so sad I didnt make a double batch. We DEvoured every last drop of it and needless to say I’ll be making this again! It was so easy and yummy!

My daughter and i love this sauce!!!! It’s simple to make and super delicious!!! Thank you for sharing this recipe.

  46. 5 stars
This sauce was delicious! I used equal parts of Whole milk and Half & Half for a richer taste, but all whole milk would probably be just as good! Very easy to do — I had all of the ingredients prepped (garlic and parsley chopped, flour measured out) beforehand, so it came together very quickly! Thanks for sharing!

  47. 5 stars
Fantastic recipe. Substitute salt with Mr. Binghams seasoning and used penne instead. Turned out so delicious!

    1. I personally have not, but you sure could 🙂 It would add a different flavor, but I am sure it would still be good.

  48. 5 stars
This is so easy and oNe of the best pasta cream sauce recipeS i’ve tried, my son loves it! Thanks Luna 🙂

  49. 5 stars
This recipe is awesome! I cut the recipe in half since I’m cooking for 2 and it still made a lot! It’s creamy and so full of flavor. The only change i made besides the AMOUNT is adding a tablespoon of SOUR cream to my sause (i add it to many recipes that have cheese in it). I will use this as a base from now on for many different variations of this recipe. Thank you so much for sharing recipe!!

    1. 5 stars
Family loved it. Made it last night and even my 3 year old gobbled it up. So good. I used Fettuccine noodles instead of penne and added shrimp.

  50. 5 stars

  51. 5 stars
I actually made this when it was first put up!!!! we love it at home! Ive actually made modifications; changing the pasta used, adding protein, and its stayed flavorful and yummy!

  52. 5 stars
Love this! I especially love that it just uses milk instead of cream because heavy cream doesn’t sit well With me. The family gobbled it up and it makes a ton- I have 4 boys 2 which are teenagers and we actually had a little leftover!

Such an easy and YUMMY recipe. My husband and kids Kept going back for seconds! We ate it as a side dish but I’m def goIng to make it wIth broccoLi and grilled chicken next time. My hUsband Kept eXClaiming it as the best Pasta ever lol. Easy, pantry ingredients and loved by all!

  65. i love your idea an cant wait to try it! But i have one questioN, can i subst SOMETHING for The broth? If i can then Can u please give me a suggestion?

    1. I don’t know if it’s because of dietary needs, but you can always use water or maybe milk. Google has more suggestions 😉 It really is so good, I hope you find something to use instead.

  66. Thank you for the recipe! It indeed was quick and the sauce was nice and creamy. However, I found the amount of sauce too little for even half the pasta. I kept half of it aside and the half that I put with the sauce was too dry so I had to make another batch of sauce. This quantity of sauce might be good for 4 oz of pasta, I’d estimate. 🙂

  67. 5 stars
The family enJoyed this recipe. I useD a little more garlic and added mozzarella. Really gReat and easy!!

  68. 5 stars
Thanks – this was perfect i added chicken and broccoli and all the kids finished their plates!

  70. 5 stars
This was a great recipe. I added peas and bacon on the boW Tie pasta and it was amazing. Extra garlic was a plus!!

  71. 5 stars
Hi, I will try this for my family dinner tomorrow, but the only problem is that I don’t have chicken broth and the store where I will get this has an odd time of opening and closing due to the pandemic, so what do I do?

    1. I would just google what some good substitutes are, then you can see what you have. You could use water & chicken bouillon, if you have it.

  72. Funny story about this recipe, I was getting frustrated because I kept adding flour and it was not getting thicker. Finally I gave up and poured it on pasta. It was ridiculously sweet. I came to read the reviews and nothing said anything about it being ridiculously sweet. So I kind of just SUCKed it up and thought with every bite about how I’ll never make this recipe again. And then it hit me that i didn’t have anywhere to put the powder sugar 2 weeks ago so i put it in a container just like the container i used for my flour…. I think you can figure out the rest….?‍♀️

    1. LOL…funny, but so sorry you were adding the wrong thing!! Well, I hope you try it with the flour & like it 🙂 Thank you for sharing that!

  73. 5 stars
This was a great recipe. My daughter doesn’t like red sauce so we tried this on our tortellini and it was an instant hit. Thanks, we will be making this again. And as a bonus, she was able to help make it!

  74. 5 stars
Did its job. I used half water and half heavy whipping cream instead of milk since i didn’t have milk. Reliable recipe for a quick, thick white sauce

  75. I am falling in love with this food blog. I think i need to MAKE ALL THESE RECIPES AT MY HOME

  76. 4 stars
Very awesome and tasty. But When i added the PARMESAN it wAsnt enOugh for me so i added about 1 more cup. DeliciOus

  77. 5 stars
So good! All 3 kids loved it! I USED heavy cream i had to use up. QUICK AND easy recipe!

  78. 5 stars
O my gosh is this good!! I added a few more spices and added a rotisserie chicken to add more flavor. Added broccoli too..everyone loved it..Oo and I doubled the recipe for the sauce!!

    1. 3 stars
I really want to like this, the one cup of parmesan was way too overpowering. The recipe was easy to follow and fun to do, but my parent and i couldn’t finish a plate. Next time I will make sure to use less

  79. hi,

I don’t have chicken broth to hand. Can you make it WITHOUT the broth? dO I ADD AN EXTRA CUP OF MILK?

    1. I personally have not tried adding more milk. The broth adds more flavor. I would google some suggestions. I know there are a ton. Hope that helps 🙂

  80. 5 stars
it is difficult to find a quick, delicious recipe for a weeknight meal, but this one fits the bill. Added bonus is that we always have these ingredients on hand. Followed the instructions exactly as written. however, you should double the sauce if you have 6 people. There were only two of us and enough sauce left over for about one more. But it’s a keeper! This one will definitely end up in our rotation! Thank you for sharing it.

I made this tonight for my Italian husband and pasta snob son and they both liked it! I’m thrilled and will make it again.

    1. I haven’t added veggies, but it would depend on how much you add. If it isn’t too much, you shouldn’t have to or you can make 1 1/2 x the amount.

I made this tonight foR my three daughters. They loved it! So much Better with the chicken broth as compared to others with heavy Cream. A keeper for our home.

  83. This looks DELICIOUS! I’m actually going to make this as a side with some bLackened salmon. HoweveR, I don’T have parmESan cheese, Only MOZZARELLA cheeSe, is that ok instead?

What to do with leftover rotisserie chicken? Googling “Creamy White Sauce Pasta”, I came across this wonderful, tasty recipe. I had about eight ounces each of Cellentini and Rigatoni. Cooked the pasta according to the package. I heated the chicken with a 1/2 TSP of butter in a large pan. Removed the chicken and used the pan for the recipe. I drained the pasta and put it back in the pasta pan, added and mixed the chicken. I add and stirred the sauce when it was ready.

This recipe will be my go-to white sauce recipe! Thank you.

Thank you! Perfect! I added chicken before butter and garlic and broccoli at end. My picky son loved the sauce so much he drank the leftover sauce!

this is my second time to try this recipe. My children loved my first attempt. This recipe is so simple and yet so delicious and easy to prepare.
    Thanks a lot Ms. Lil.

    1. You will need liquid, so you will need to add equal part of your choice. I haven’t tried anything else, so not sure if you’d use water or milk.

    2. 5 stars
I used veggie broth (not low sodium) and it turned out great! Kept the part of milk though. So 1 cup veg broth and 1 cup milk.

This was easy to make. I loved it. I poured over my spinach and cheese tortellini. I have swallowing issues due to cancer, so I use a lot of gravy on just about anything I eat. Makes my food go down easier. So thanks for this yummy recipe.

If I could I would give this pasta 10 stars. So easy to make and the whole family loves it. Highly recommend this recipe.

This is one of the best while sauce recipe I have made! It’s super easy to make and it’s very flavorful! Never buying the white sauce from store again.

  89. 5 stars
So simple and tasty! Added a bunch of vegetables and added it slowly to assure I had a good spaghetti-sauce-veggies ratio.

    Thank you!

  90. This looks good and super simple. What if you don’t have chicken broth? Could I use a cream of chicken instead or would that turn out weird?

    1. It really is! I haven’t tried that before. I would check to see online what good substitutes for the broth would be.

As a mother of seven it’s hard to please everyone at the same time when it comes to meals but this was a crowd pleaser and so easy. Thank you.

WOW! Made this tonight and all my husband said between mouthfuls and a heaping second helping of the angel hair pasta it went over was…”winning” and “keep this recipe or put it in ur memory” hahahaha!! Such a simplistic sauce yet sophisticated enough for any dish u would use a nice creamy white sauce for…i did add some lemon juice to it to play up the flavor profile a little…was suuuuuper gooood….our recently turned picky toddler even enjoyed this and ate it all!! He said mmmm mmmmm lol..happy mama!! Thx for a “winning” sauce that will go into my “memory bank” and be a regularly used delicious sauce.

      1. Thank you so much for the recipe.
I was looking for the recipe everywhere 👍🏻😋😋
        I’m going to make tonight

I loved this for my first time making Alfred. Im only 10 and this was amazing My family loves it and I do to I highly recommend this. 🍝

Easy to make and I had all the ingredients for a last minute pasta dish. I added sauted shrimp to top it off. My husband kept saying, “restaurant quality”. He had 3 servings. I also was impressed how easy the recipe was to follow and the ingredients and aroma all came together for a delicious pasta sauce. I will be making this again with other toppings.

I’ve made this recipe a dozen times as my family loves it!! One of the reasons I love it so much is because it doesn’t call for heavy cream and is quick to make on our busy nights. I use 1% milk, FF chicken broth, and add red pepper flakes for an extra kick. I always make it with chicken but tonight I added spinach, sundried tomatoes and shrimp and WOW!! Super yummy! Thanks Kristyn!

I made this for the first time ever. Perfect dish for Lent. I halved the pasta and made 2/3rds of the sauce for extra creaminess since it is just the two of us. I added peas for veggie tonight, but I will be trying other toppings for sure! Other veggies, chicken, BACON? Possibilities are endless. Thank you for creating this new staple in my recipe box.

      1. You’re welcome! I’m so glad you enjoyed it! And bacon goes well with just about anything. 😉

  96. Really yummy! But, my flour clumped up and found it need lemon juice and more parmesan cheese! My 6 year old pasta critic said “momma this is really good but, it needs more cheese!”

  97. 5 stars
A hit with the entire family, including my 13yo who is picky. I added some fresh steamed broccoli since all my meat was frozen. Would be good with spinach or peas too!

    1. The fresh steamed broccoli sounds heavenly for this recipe. I should try that out too! I’m glad your family liked it so much!

  98. 5 stars
Great sauce recipe! I added shrimp and a little onion. I ended up using mozzarella cheese instead of Parmesan since that is all I had on hand. It was really creamy. Saved the recipe for future use.

  99. 5 stars
Super easy to whip up and very yummy. I had no Parmesan cheese, so I used some shredded cheddar instead and it still tasted great 👍🏼

    1. Thank you!! I’m glad you loved it! Simple and good should always go together, right?!

I’ve made this about three times before and never added parsley because we never had it. Today I added a bit less than what the recipe says and it does not add a nice flavor. It was a brand new bottle so I don’t know what happened. It was also a lot thicker than the other times

    1. Sorry to hear it didn’t turn out how you were hoping this time. Parsley is definitely an ingredient that can be omitted if your family doesn’t care for the flavor. 🙂

  101. 5 stars
Great “go to” recipe when you are in a hurry , or you can serve as a side dish and spruce it up with an assortment of veggies or meat of your choice. This quick little recipe has so many options. I LOVE IT !!!!

    1. I’m glad you liked it!! And that sounds like a yummy protein addition. Thanks for sharing.

5/24/21 Just made this dish for my son and me, very quick and easy, and I added angel hair pasta, cooked chicken breast which was a plus, salad and bread done .. pretty cool I’ll be cooking this alot..Thanks‼️👍🏽

    1. You’re welcome! I’m so glad that you enjoyed the pasta. The sides you added sound like the perfect addition to the meal.

Adding 1 cup broth and 1 cup milk to 3 tablespoons of flour made for a very very thick sauce. Adding another cup of milk made it much more manageable.

If you want a super thick sauce, follow the instructions.

Overall, pretty good. A few modifications makes it excellent.

  104. I want to make this but was wondering how much salt you add? I know it says to taste but what would be a good starting point. Thank you

    1. I usually just do a few shakes of salt to start and then add from there if I feel it needs more. If measuring it out, maybe 1/8 tsp and go from there. If that’s not enough, gradually add a little more in.

    2. 5 stars
Loved this recipe!! I ran out of Alfredo sauce so I used this recipe. It is delicious! I didn’t have parsley, but it was still very good tasting.

    1. Sorry to hear you felt there wasn’t enough information. Please let us know if you have any specific questions regarding the recipe that we can help answer. 🙂

10000000000/5 absolutely amazing!! I’m still a beginner at cooking and I’m so glad I found this recipe, it’s simple, has common ingredients and tastes delicious! Would definitely recommend 🙂

I have made this several times and I will never go back to store bought sauce again! The only change I make is I add another cup of parmesan. Thank you!

  106. 5 stars
Love the recipe! Have made it several times, and am making it again tonight! Can’t wait! I’ve made a few modifications such as adding sauteed onions and mushrooms and throwing in some peas. I might even add some ham tonight. But it’s a winner every time! Thanks!

    1. Ooh those add-ins sound tasty! I’m sure they make it taste great. Thanks for giving the recipe a try. Glad to hear you enjoy it!

  107. 5 stars
What a wonderful and simple sauce! Could easily do different herbs to switch up the flavor. Thanks for this classic creamy recipe!!

  108. 2 stars
the recipe overall is ok but it needs to be specified more it was too salty for me and it was just not tasting that good

    1. Thanks for your feedback and for giving the recipe a try. You can totally play around with the amount of salt if it was more than you prefer. 🙂

  109. Looks delicious & certainly going to try making it. My question is – with your recipe how much does it actually make? I will need enough to serve 6 people so do I double this recipe or? Thanks.

    1. This recipe makes enough for about 6 servings… depending on how large the servings are, you may want to 1.5x the recipe. You can adjust the servings on the recipe card on the post. If you have a group of adults who may eat larger portions, you could increase the servings a bit. If there are children or others who may not eat as much, the 6 servings it makes may be enough too. It might also depend on if you are serving side dishes with it, etc. You can also save leftovers in the fridge for 3-5 days and have it for lunches or another dinner later if you do double it and have extra.

    1. Hi Jim! The advertisements help provide the means for us to be able to continue to deliver free recipes, meal plans, content, etc. for our amazing readers. We hope you understand and continue to enjoy the recipes. 🙂

    1. Just depending on how large of portions are served, 4 may be a better number for some… it may stretch for 6 for others (especially if children are eating too). There is a feature on the recipe card that you can adjust the amount, so you can slide that up a bit if you want to make more too! 🙂

    1. I would recommend using all-purpose, but since there is such a small amount of flour in the white sauce, you can probably get away with it. I haven’t tried using self-rising flour so I’m not sure how it would alter flavor/texture, but you could certainly give it a try!

    1. Hi Maria! All of the measurements are listed in the recipe card at the bottom of the post. You can also click on “Jump to Recipe” and it’ll take you right to the full recipe. Here is a quick reference of measurements for this recipe: 1 lb penne pasta
      3 tbsp butter
      2 tsp minced garlic
      3 tbsp flour
      1 cup chicken broth
      1 cup milk
      2 tsp dried parsley
      1 cup grated parmesan cheese
      salt and pepper to taste

  110. Save a little pasta water and add it to the sauce if too thick. I also used two cup of Better than Bullion Roasted Chicken flavor. What a great recipe find!

This pasta is incredible ! I do suggest adding on 2 more cups of milk and broth to make more sauce because the 1 cup is not enough sauce for 1 pound of penne pasta, but this is incredible. My family loves this pasta, especially when we added in shrimp. Thanks so much for this recipe !!

  114. 5 stars
This is hands down the BEST sauce ever. Restaurant quality amazing. The leftovers were even amazing. This is a staple in our home now.
    Thank you for sharing

We made this last night with shells instead of penne. The sauce is incredible. It tastes like ones from fancy restaurants that you’re always dying to know the ingredients for. I love how creamy the sauce was. We’ll definitely be using this recipe going forward for white cream sauces.

  116. 3 stars
Pretty good if you add garlic salt, otherwise it’s pretty bland and doesn’t have a lot of flavor, even if you add extra garlic.

  117. 3 stars
Easy recipe for a decent meal. Overall, though I think it lacks flavor. It’s definitely not bad at all, just pretty boring.

    1. Thanks so much for the kind words! We’ll definitely pass them onto Kristyn! Hope you enjoy the White Sauce Pasta!

  118. 5 stars
It was so so yum! We followed the recipe but added a bag of fresh spinach to the sauce and let it wilt. Was very good my kids loved it. A better version of Alfredo in my opinion and less calories

So good. I added left over roast chicken and wished I’D added some little pieces of roast pumpkin.
We are in Covid isolation so makin the most of what is in the house.
    Would definitely make again. Thanks

    1. Mmm I bet it was tasty with that roasted chicken and roasted pumpkin would be a fun addition too. Best of luck with the isolation!!

    1. That’s always a win when a picky eater enjoys a recipe! Hooray!! So glad you all enjoyed the pasta.

Excellent sauce. It’s great and an easy recipe. My husband and I will be having leftovers tomorrow… yum! I will thin the sauce out with a little milk or broth when I reheat it. Sooooo goood!!!!

  121. 5 stars
Easy and tasty! Reminds me of Sidekicks, except that it’s homemade, which means less sodium and chemicals. I made it alongside mayo parm chicken (from this website) and some peas. I would definitely make this again!

  122. 5 stars
Dang. I just made this pasta sauce and it was lip smacking. I used heavy cream in place of the milk to make it creamier. Will definitely make this again. Thank you!

  123. 5 stars
I literally just made it in this is amazing. Thank you so much for this recipe and I’m glad I found it. I didn’t have cheddar cheese so I couldn’t make a regular mac & cheese. I just wanted a simple white sauce and I came upon your recipe. It is a total hit in my house. Even my three year old who is picky loves it

  124. 5 stars
I just did this with a pan of onion, carrots, and mushroom on the side. Added in at the end…perfection. The ratio of butter/flour/stock/milk (I used heavy cream instead though) is really exactly what you need here. The trick to a good white sauce is that butter/flour/liquid ratio, and this one is spot on.

Needs salt is all, like any white sauce it gets very flavorless without help. Taste then add!

    1. Thanks for sharing what you did. Sounds like a tasty addition! So glad you enjoyed the recipe.

  125. 5 stars
Simple and easy sauce, I should have been doing this all along through the years (SMH) lol

  126. 5 stars
Thank you! Quick and easy with pantry staples. I never have cream for alfredo but my kids liked this.

  127. 5 stars
Had to use beef broth instead of chicken but still came out really good. Also added shrimp and broccoli. Thanks for the recipe.

    1. You’re welcome! I’m so glad you enjoyed the dish. The addition of shrimp and broccoli sound delicious!

I cut up some chicken I still had in the fridge and added it to this recipe. Dynamite! Now part of the regular meal rotation.

  129. 5 stars
This came out absolutely delicious! My family cleaned their plates! I made it with chicken meatballs and chick pea pasta- you can’t tell the difference- great recipe! It tool me an 90 min with the meatballs and clean. Will make it a regular meal.

Love this super simple and easy recipe! I would like to make this again. Thank you, Kristyn, for this mouth-watering recipe.

This penne pasta recipe was a hit at last weekend’s gathering. My family appreciated and loved its creamy and garlicky flavor. I’ll surely make this highly recommended recipe on repeat.

How come the directions at the end say add mozzarella but that’s not part of the ingredient list?? I’m extremely new to cooking…i don’t know what I should do!?

  133. Someone asked “how much Mozzarella at the end of instructions?” The question didn’t get answered. I would also like to know how much Mozzarella to use…Please?

  134. 5 stars
Yummy! Quick, easy, and using ingredients I had in house without going to store! The mozzarella definitely made it extra cheesy.

  135. I haven’t made this but I’m really concerned about the Kcal aspect.. do you mean something other than kilocalorie? 191 Kcal is 191000 calories.
