White sauce recipe on top of penne pasta topped with fresh herbs.

Too good NOT to Love!

We LOVE pasta so much that we have it for dinner every Tuesday night.

Our White Sauce Pasta recipe is one that is so simple and loved so much that it’s made at least once a month. In fact, it’s so easy that the older kids can make it on their own.

We love to serve it with some Fried Zucchini and Cheesy Garlic Bread (or Knots) and especially love that it’s made in no time. It’s honestly too good not to love.

Why you’ll love it:

  • Simple and quick. You can make it start to finish in about 20 minutes.
  • Basic ingredients. This type of sauce uses a flour roux made with flour, butter, and milk.
  • Versatile. You can use the white sauce (also known as Béchamel sauce) as a base for other sauces (like Alfredo Sauce),or on pizza or in lasagna.
  • Customizable. You can add any veggies or protein you like! Our favorite is adding chicken to make a Chicken Penne Pasta.
Cooked Penne noodles in colander.

Ingredients

  • penne – or another short pasta like macaroni or rotini
  • unsalted butter
  • minced garlic
  • all-purpose flour – Make a gluten-free substitute using four parts potato starch to three parts cornflour. Once you have the mixture, measure out 3 tablespoons and use it in place of the flour.
  • milk – Use whole milk for the creamiest pasta sauce, but you can also use 2% or fat free milk. If you want it extra thick, use half and half or heavy cream.
  • chicken broth – or vegetable broth for a vegetarian version
  • mozzarella & parmesan cheese To make the cheese sauce extra cheesy, add up to ½ cup more of each.
  • season with parsley, garlic salt & black pepper – You can also add a teaspoon of red chili flakes or nutmeg.
Creamy Pasta Sauce in a skillet.

How to Make White Sauce Pasta

  1. PASTA. Cook pasta according to package directions. Drain and set aside.
  2. ROUX. Meanwhile, in a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add garlic and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Add flour and cook, stirring constantly, for 1 minute more.
  3. BOIL. Add milk and broth to the pan and cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce boils and thickens about 5 minutes.
  4. SEASON. Add Parmesan, parsley, garlic salt, and pepper. Continue stirring until the cheese has melted.
  5. SERVE. Add pasta to the sauce and stir to combine. Add mozzarella and stir until melted. Serve warm.

Pro Tip!

When adding flour to the butter, make sure to cook it long enough or it will taste like flour. While adding milk, take your time pouring it slowly and whisk constantly or it may have lumps.

Recipe FAQ

  • Protein. Try adding meats such as grilled chicken, diced ham, or shrimp (we love our Chicken Penne Pasta).
  • Produce. Add produce such as halved cherry tomatoes, sliced sun-dried tomatoes, asparagus, broccoli, bell peppers, or mushrooms.
  • Leftover cream pasta sauce can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-5 days.
  • We typically REHEAT this pasta in the microwave, but this can also be done in a pot on the stove. You may need to add a little more broth if it’s too thick when reheating.
  • If you plan to freeze this dish, leave the pasta undercooked as the freezing process will make thoroughly cooked pasta mushy. Store the cooked dish in a freezer-safe airtight container for months.
    • To reheat. Thaw this simple pasta recipe in the fridge and reheat on the stove top stirring constantly to keep the cream base from curdling. Adding a bit more milk will help smooth out the texture.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful recipe with us. My Boyfriend loved it and has already requested it again this week. I fried Bacon then cooked my chicken (1 to 2″ cubes) in the bacon grease then added asparagus tips. I set those ingredients aside along with the pasta. I made my white sauce and added all the ingredients along when adding the pasta. I served it with French bread, and it was delicious!

Sounds perfect!! I am so glad he liked it!! Thank you for sharing that!

  2. Ryana says:

The garlic gets overcooked based on the recipe and the sauce isn’t that creamy.

      Thanks for the feedback.

This is another unbelievably delicious dish from Kristyn. We tripled the recipe and probably ended up with half of it left after the three of us ate. I did not have quite the amount of Parmesan cheese that the recipe called for, but, believe me, it was divine!!!!!

This is a very solid base recipe for white sauce. I have cooked it at least six times at this point and in doing so have made my own personal adjustments to better suite it to my preferred taste (half the minced garlic, half the parsley, add a quarter cup of heavy whipping, 7/8 cup of chicken broth instead of 1 cup, add 2.5 pounds of cooked chicken ). That being said my only firm disagreement with the recipe above would be the amount of noodles recommended. It is simply not enough sauce for the amount of noodles. I would recommend using half the amount of noodles as it is more proportionate to the amount of sauce rendered by this recipe. This is based of my own personal experiences cooking this recipe multiple times. If you are looking to make some delicious chicken in white sauce then this is a great recipe! I would definitely recommend starting here then making it your own whenever or wherever you feel inclined to do so! Thanks Luna!

The best white sauce! My kids devoured it fresh and again the next day for leftovers. We used elbow macaroni, peas, and chicken with this yummy and easy sauce!

  8. Malak khaled says:

    The pasta so delicousss

  9. Megha Paul says:

After adding the flour, it clumped up 🙁

    1. Taylor Dinsmore says:

If you did the roux correctly, stirring constantly, the flour shouldn’t have clumped up unless you added too much.

  10. Sandy says:

This has become our family’s favorite dinner! I add chicken to it tho! My 2nd grade granddaughter asked me if I would make it for snack on their first day of school! It is her very favorite too! I was expecting her to ask for cupcakes or something sweet but nope, she wants this casserole! Note: I get the cooked rotisserie chicken at Costco and it becomes a full dinner!

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Ok I love that she wanted this for her afterschool snack! So cute!! Adding the rotisserie chicken with it is a great idea to make it a full meal. I’m so glad this recipe is a hit with your family!

  11. Karen M. Sheppard says:

Another vegetarian recipe – YEAH ! I can substitute veggie broth.

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

      Yes, you definitely could!!

This recipe was delicious overall. However, I couldn’t get the flour to dissolve with the milk and broth for the life of me. I was stirring the flour consistently on medium-high heat for almost an hour. It still wouldn’t dissolve. I tried lowering the heat. I tried increasing the heat. I even tried taking it off the heat. Nothing worked. I ended up giving up and just adding the rest of the ingredients to the sauce and combining with the pasta. Unfortunately, the sauce had this grainy texture and it was very off-putting. The taste, also didn’t take taste like much. Just flour really. It was probably a mistake I made, but I recommend not using the flour. You can definitely make the same exact sauce without the flour and end up with the same result! I served with grilled chicken and green beans on the side!

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Thanks for sharing. You possibly did this, but I always pour the milk in very slowly and gradually while whisking to try to help it combine smoothly. Hope that helps in the future!

Why count grams, with all the cream and milk? If for health, I would skip this one.

I have made it and it is yummy.

This recipe is fantastic, but what’s up with the serving size in the nutrition information?? Serving size = 1 gram?? There’s no way that’s right. Nobody eats a gram of food at a time. There are 28.35 grams in an ounce, and a normal serving size of anything is a couple of ounces. Please correct the serving size; it makes it impossible to count calories for those of us who need to.

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Thanks for the feedback. We’ll look into that!

  20. Laura says:

I think I put in too much flour.. should I add water or milk or anything?

  23. Don says:

Can I make the sauce ahead of time and store in the fridge?

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Yes you can. Then you can reheat either in the microwave or on the stovetop when ready to toss with the pasta.

  24. Sam says:

Not my favorite. Just tastes kinda plain.

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Thanks for the feedback and for giving the recipe a try.

  32. Carrie Knight says:

Ok this is delicious but I felt it was more of a gravy than a pasta sauce? I added cooked chicken sausage to it and served with a spinach and ricotta ravioli and it was very tasty. Thinned the sauce some with more chicken broth. Actually used the leftover sauce with toast and eggs for breakfast. I will definitely make again but maybe less flour?

My family loves this recipe. I cook it about once every other week. I add ground turkey meat and I use rigatoni noodles as it holds the meat and sauce better.

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Sounds delicious! Thanks for sharing what you do!

  38. James says:

1g serving!? With that many calories?? How? Can you convert this to an easier to measure serving size?

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

A serving size would actually be about a 3/4 cup – 1 cup.

  39. Diana Baker says:

So, my stove went out while trying to boil water and I already had all the ingredients out so I put everything in a 9×13 casserole dish, added 2 cups of water to accommodate the uncooked pasta, covered with foil and baked for 30 minutes at 400 degrees. When it was done I stirred it and let it rest/cool for 15 minutes and the sauce thickened up and it was delicious. My toddler at 3 servings! So if anyone has stove trouble, they can totally throw it in the oven after adding the extra water! Thanks for this recipe.

I was craving creamy pasta tonight and found your recipe. I added 2 slices of chopped bacon and then cooked the garlic in the bacon grease. Added the butter and continued on as written. I had a pack of tortellini in the freezer so I used that vs. spaghetti.
This was very, very good. Quick, easy and did I mention it’s really good?
Thanks for the recipe! I’ll be making this again!

I just did this with a pan of onion, carrots, and mushroom on the side. Added in at the end…perfection. The ratio of butter/flour/stock/milk (I used heavy cream instead though) is really exactly what you need here. The trick to a good white sauce is that butter/flour/liquid ratio, and this one is spot on.

Needs salt is all, like any white sauce it gets very flavorless without help. Taste then add!

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Thanks for sharing what you did. Sounds like a tasty addition! So glad you enjoyed the recipe.

It was so so yum! We followed the recipe but added a bag of fresh spinach to the sauce and let it wilt. Was very good my kids loved it. A better version of Alfredo in my opinion and less calories

Pretty good if you add garlic salt, otherwise it’s pretty bland and doesn’t have a lot of flavor, even if you add extra garlic.

We made this last night with shells instead of penne. The sauce is incredible. It tastes like ones from fancy restaurants that you’re always dying to know the ingredients for. I love how creamy the sauce was. We’ll definitely be using this recipe going forward for white cream sauces.

This pasta is incredible ! I do suggest adding on 2 more cups of milk and broth to make more sauce because the 1 cup is not enough sauce for 1 pound of penne pasta, but this is incredible. My family loves this pasta, especially when we added in shrimp. Thanks so much for this recipe !!

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Thanks for the feedback. Ooh I bet adding the shrimp was delicious! So glad you loved the recipe!

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Hi Maria! All of the measurements are listed in the recipe card at the bottom of the post. You can also click on “Jump to Recipe” and it’ll take you right to the full recipe. Here is a quick reference of measurements for this recipe: 1 lb penne pasta
      3 tbsp butter
      2 tsp minced garlic
      3 tbsp flour
      1 cup chicken broth
      1 cup milk
      2 tsp dried parsley
      1 cup grated parmesan cheese
      salt and pepper to taste

    Did not turn out

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

So sorry to hear the recipe didn’t turn out for you. Thanks for giving the recipe a try!

  105. Olivia says:

Is it ok to use self rising flour if that’s all you have ?

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

I would recommend using all-purpose, but since there is such a small amount of flour in the white sauce, you can probably get away with it. I haven’t tried using self-rising flour so I’m not sure how it would alter flavor/texture, but you could certainly give it a try!

  106. Natalie says:

1 lb (454 grams) of pasta doesn’t seem like much for 6 people, maybe 4 portions it would be okay.

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Just depending on how large of portions are served, 4 may be a better number for some… it may stretch for 6 for others (especially if children are eating too). There is a feature on the recipe card that you can adjust the amount, so you can slide that up a bit if you want to make more too! 🙂

    This absolutely delicious!!!

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Oh thank you! Glad to hear you enjoyed the dish!

  110. Gayle Gordey says:

Looks delicious & certainly going to try making it. My question is – with your recipe how much does it actually make? I will need enough to serve 6 people so do I double this recipe or? Thanks.

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

This recipe makes enough for about 6 servings… depending on how large the servings are, you may want to 1.5x the recipe. You can adjust the servings on the recipe card on the post. If you have a group of adults who may eat larger portions, you could increase the servings a bit. If there are children or others who may not eat as much, the 6 servings it makes may be enough too. It might also depend on if you are serving side dishes with it, etc. You can also save leftovers in the fridge for 3-5 days and have it for lunches or another dinner later if you do double it and have extra.

  111. Prisha says:

Is it ok if I use vegetable brother instead of chicken broth?

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Sorry to hear you felt there wasn’t enough information. Please let us know if you have any specific questions regarding the recipe that we can help answer. 🙂

  118. Angie says:

I want to make this but was wondering how much salt you add? I know it says to taste but what would be a good starting point. Thank you

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

I usually just do a few shakes of salt to start and then add from there if I feel it needs more. If measuring it out, maybe 1/8 tsp and go from there. If that’s not enough, gradually add a little more in.

    2. Sandra says:

Adding 1 cup broth and 1 cup milk to 3 tablespoons of flour made for a very very thick sauce. Adding another cup of milk made it much more manageable.

If you want a super thick sauce, follow the instructions.

Overall, pretty good. A few modifications makes it excellent.

I’ve made this about three times before and never added parsley because we never had it. Today I added a bit less than what the recipe says and it does not add a nice flavor. It was a brand new bottle so I don’t know what happened. It was also a lot thicker than the other times

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Sorry to hear it didn’t turn out how you were hoping this time. Parsley is definitely an ingredient that can be omitted if your family doesn’t care for the flavor. 🙂

I’ve made this recipe a dozen times as my family loves it!! One of the reasons I love it so much is because it doesn’t call for heavy cream and is quick to make on our busy nights. I use 1% milk, FF chicken broth, and add red pepper flakes for an extra kick. I always make it with chicken but tonight I added spinach, sundried tomatoes and shrimp and WOW!! Super yummy! Thanks Kristyn!

I made this for the first time ever. Perfect dish for Lent. I halved the pasta and made 2/3rds of the sauce for extra creaminess since it is just the two of us. I added peas for veggie tonight, but I will be trying other toppings for sure! Other veggies, chicken, BACON? Possibilities are endless. Thank you for creating this new staple in my recipe box.

WOW! Made this tonight and all my husband said between mouthfuls and a heaping second helping of the angel hair pasta it went over was…”winning” and “keep this recipe or put it in ur memory” hahahaha!! Such a simplistic sauce yet sophisticated enough for any dish u would use a nice creamy white sauce for…i did add some lemon juice to it to play up the flavor profile a little…was suuuuuper gooood….our recently turned picky toddler even enjoyed this and ate it all!! He said mmmm mmmmm lol..happy mama!! Thx for a “winning” sauce that will go into my “memory bank” and be a regularly used delicious sauce.

What to do with leftover rotisserie chicken? Googling “Creamy White Sauce Pasta”, I came across this wonderful, tasty recipe. I had about eight ounces each of Cellentini and Rigatoni. Cooked the pasta according to the package. I heated the chicken with a 1/2 TSP of butter in a large pan. Removed the chicken and used the pan for the recipe. I drained the pasta and put it back in the pasta pan, added and mixed the chicken. I add and stirred the sauce when it was ready.

This recipe will be my go-to white sauce recipe! Thank you.

Sounds yummy! Though I was wondering will I have to make more sauce if I add veggies?

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

I haven’t added veggies, but it would depend on how much you add. If it isn’t too much, you shouldn’t have to or you can make 1 1/2 x the amount.

it is difficult to find a quick, delicious recipe for a weeknight meal, but this one fits the bill. Added bonus is that we always have these ingredients on hand. Followed the instructions exactly as written. however, you should double the sauce if you have 6 people. There were only two of us and enough sauce left over for about one more. But it’s a keeper! This one will definitely end up in our rotation! Thank you for sharing it.

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

Glad to share 🙂 Happy it made the rotation! Thank you!

This was a great recipe. My daughter doesn’t like red sauce so we tried this on our tortellini and it was an instant hit. Thanks, we will be making this again. And as a bonus, she was able to help make it!

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

Good idea!! Thank you for sharing that 🙂 I will have to try!

  181. Carly says:

Funny story about this recipe, I was getting frustrated because I kept adding flour and it was not getting thicker. Finally I gave up and poured it on pasta. It was ridiculously sweet. I came to read the reviews and nothing said anything about it being ridiculously sweet. So I kind of just SUCKed it up and thought with every bite about how I’ll never make this recipe again. And then it hit me that i didn’t have anywhere to put the powder sugar 2 weeks ago so i put it in a container just like the container i used for my flour…. I think you can figure out the rest….?‍♀️

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

LOL…funny, but so sorry you were adding the wrong thing!! Well, I hope you try it with the flour & like it 🙂 Thank you for sharing that!

Hi, I will try this for my family dinner tomorrow, but the only problem is that I don’t have chicken broth and the store where I will get this has an odd time of opening and closing due to the pandemic, so what do I do?

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

I would just google what some good substitutes are, then you can see what you have. You could use water & chicken bouillon, if you have it.

  189. Ambreen says:

Thank you for the recipe! It indeed was quick and the sauce was nice and creamy. However, I found the amount of sauce too little for even half the pasta. I kept half of it aside and the half that I put with the sauce was too dry so I had to make another batch of sauce. This quantity of sauce might be good for 4 oz of pasta, I’d estimate. 🙂

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

Thank you for giving it a try 🙂

  190. Sera says:

i love your idea an cant wait to try it! But i have one questioN, can i subst SOMETHING for The broth? If i can then Can u please give me a suggestion?

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

I don’t know if it’s because of dietary needs, but you can always use water or maybe milk. Google has more suggestions 😉 It really is so good, I hope you find something to use instead.

The only change i made besides the AMOUNT is adding a tablespoon of SOUR cream to my sause (i add it to many recipes that have cheese in it). I will use this as a base from now on for many different variations of this recipe. Thank you so much for sharing recipe!!

I made this last night as a side dish. Fairly simple to make and tasty. a whole pound of pasta is too much for my family so i only prepared 8 oz. I still made the whole recipe for sauce. i used a little over half for the pasta and used the rest to pour over some roasted chicken breast. i only had 1% milk and was worried my sauce may not thicken up but it did just fine.

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

I am sure it could be 🙂 I haven’t left it out, but I would substitute some liquid. It could be water or if you have chicken bouillon, I would mix that in with the water. You could use another broth, too, if you have others.

Hi! I just made this today & cut everything to 50% since it’s just for 2 people. Half a box of pasta, 1.5 tb butter, 1 tsp minced garlic, 1.5 tb flour, 1.5 cup broth, 1.5 milk, 1 tsp parsley, and 1/4 cup parmesan cheese.

End result- it didn’t look like there was enough sauce for half a box of pasta. The sauce was only enough for maybe maybe.. 1/4 of the pasta.

Did I do something wrong? After I did step 4, the flour made the garlic/butter into little clumpy balls. So I added milk/broth which helped but there was not a lot of sauce to use. Any advice would help! I’m a total newbie in the kitchen.

BTW, the sauce is delicious! 🙂

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

The flour does do that, but when you add the milk, it should get smooth. You have to stir constantly. I have never halved it, so I wish I knew about the sauce being enough. You would think it should be? I appreciate you trying it. You could always freeze half & reheat later:) Thank you for letting me know & I am glad that you liked the sauce. You are doing great..just keep at it 🙂

This recipe was not my favorite. It was very dry. I followed it step by step so I’m guessing something happened that went wrong but I’m not sure what. Everyone else said it was delicious so I not sure.

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

I am not sure what, either, but I thank you for giving it a try 🙂

This is good but I don’t know why milk was used instead of heavy cream to make the sauce. I of course made it with the cream. Better with the cream.

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

Sometimes, when I am out of cream, I will use the milk. And, that is what happened for this recipe. But, both work great 🙂 Thank you for trying it!

    Hello
What kind of butter should I use when I cook pasta please? I’m Asian and I don’t usually use butter so I don’t know which one is good.
    Thank you.

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

You don’t cook the pasta in butter. You cook them in boiling water, but you do start making the sauce with butter, 3 tablespoons. I just use cubed butter for that. Hope that helps!! Good luck!

this exceeded my expectations! yum! I used half a cup of whole milk and half a cup of half and half. I didn’t have broth, so I substituted white wine. I added salt and white pepper to taste. I also added a dash of garlic powder to taste, at the end, to emphasize the garlic flavor. I ate this on top of pasta with peas! tastes great with and without the peas mixed in the sauce. this was quick and easy to make. the sauce came together nicely. the consistency was very creamy. my only complaint is that my stomach isn’t big enough to eat more!

    1. Lil' Luna says:

LOL!! I am so glad you tried it and loved it!! I love the changes you made. I’ll have to try your way 🙂 Thanks so much for sharing!

    1. Lil' Luna says:

Of course, though I haven’t tried that. If you do, let us know what you used and how it came out! Thanks so much and enjoy!!

  291. Victoria says:

Looks great but that is rigatoni pasta not penne.

    1. Lil' Luna says:

I did use penne, but you could use whatever pasta you like 🙂

Loved it! Added some fresh sliced baby Bella mushrooms. Turned out fantastic! Sure to be showing up on our table again. ????

  294. Mady says:

Mine turned out to be brown sauce…why?

    1. Liv says:

Me too! I’m making it now and haven’t tried yet but it smells good

    2. Chris says:

I’m guessing you might have browned the flour too much. You really want a blonde (or slightly less) roux, so make sure you have your liquids ready before you add the garlic and flour. Adding the liquids is what will stop them from Browning.

      1. Kristyn Merkley says:

I agree, Chris. It probably burned a little. I like to have everything ready & I don’t leave it, once I’ve started, because it can, quick.

Very easy and delicious recipie! I’ve made cream sauces in the past that just didn’t work for me. This one worked great! I used powdered garlic (didn’t have fresh on hand), half and half cream as I was trying to use it up, and dill instead of parsley. Would go excellent with chicken!

    1. Lil' Luna says:

All your substitutions sound amazing! This is a recipe we love too – so glad you like it!

      1. jessica says:

        Hi Luna,

I just found this recipe and I plan to make this dish tonight! Since it’s just me, I probably will only cook half of the box of pasta…. would I need to scale back the ingredients if I do? Thanks!

      2. Lil' Luna says:

Just now seeing this. I would probably 1/3 the recipe for an individual size. 1/3 box, 1 TB butter, 1 tsp. garlic, 1 TB flour, 1/3 cup chicken broth, 1/3 cup milk, 1 tsp. parsley, 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese. 😉

Hi, every time i add the Flour to my butter it clumps up.. i stir constantly as directed. Whats going wrong?

      2. Kristyn Merkley says:

I wish I knew for sure. Your butter melted all the way first? It doesn’t have to be completely smooth, but it shouldn’t be too clumpy. You have it on medium heat?

      3. SueD says:

If it lumps, stirring quickly with a small whisk instead of a spoon should solve that.

This was fabulous. I came home craving pasta , but a very specific kind of pasta, and this hit the spot. It was so quick and was done at the same time as my noodles. I am thoroughly impressed ?

      5. Kristyn Merkley says:

Glad you were craving it! Thank you for letting me know 🙂

      6. Mima says:

YoU have to DissolvE The flour first in water sans the heat

      7. Teresa says:

sprinkle the flour over the butter do not just dump it in as this can cause the clumping

  308. Alison says:

This looks great! I just have one question. Does it matter what type of milk you use?I only usually have 1 % milk. Thanks!

    1. Lil' Luna says:

Whole milk always seems to taste best but I don’t think there is much difference if you use 1% or 2 %. 😉
