Creamy Garlic Penne Pasta

Super simple and delicious Creamy Garlic Penne Pasta recipe packed with flavor. This dish is perfect by itself or you can add chicken too!

This is one of our favorite white sauce pastas because it’s SO simple and easy! Whenever I crave a white sauce recipe, I also love to make chicken alfredo, pasta carbonara, or cheesy garlic tortellini.

I LOVE pasta! I mean, who doesn’t?! Yes, it has carbs, but this girl needs it in her life because I cook with it ALL the time. In fact, now that I think about it, we usually have pasta at least once a week, whether it’s in salad form, or a main dish.

From Spaghetti to Fettuccine Alfredo,  pasta is something the whole family loves, so we have it quite often. This next recipe is another one of those dishes you can add to the meal plan, because it’s simple and definitely delicious.

This Creamy Garlic Penne Pasta is a white sauce pasta that is great on it’s own, but could be even heartier if you add chicken or another favorite meat.

If you like pasta dishes I would definitely try this one out. It’s super cheesy and has just the right touch of garlic and other spices making it another “go-to” dinner recipe!

How to make white sauce:

One of the main reasons we love this dish is because it’s simple and quick! You can make it start to finish in about 20 minutes. That’s my kind of dinner recipe! Just follow these easy steps to make this creamy pasta sauce which can be added to any pasta.

Cook Pasta. Begin by cooking the pasta according to the package instructions (we used penne).

Make Sauce. While pasta is cooking, melt butter in a medium sauce pan, add garlic and cook for 1 minute over medium heat. Add flour and cook for an addition minute, stirring constantly. Add milk and broth, stirring constantly. Cook until sauce boils and thickens. Add parsley and parmesan cheese, salt and pepper. Stir until cheese has melted.

Combine. Mix in pasta and serve immediately.

Tip: If you want your pasta to be extra cheesy, add ½-1 cup of your favorite shredded cheese (we like to use shredded Mozzarella or Parmesan).

Change it up

Protein. There are so many things you can add to spruce up this delicious dish. Try adding meats such as grilled chicken, diced ham or shrimp.

Produce. You can also add produce such as halved cherry tomatoes, sliced sun dried tomatoes, asparagus, broccoli, bell peppers, or mushrooms.

Spice. To add a little heat, sprinkle on some red chili flakes.

What to do with leftovers

Storing. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-5 days. 

Reheating. We typically reheat this pasta in the microwave, but this can also be done in a pot on the stove. You may need to add a little more broth if it’s too thick when reheating.

Freezing. If you plan to freeze this dish, leave the pasta undercooked as the freezing process will make thoroughly cooked pasta mushy. Store the cooked dish in a freezer safe airtight container for months.

To reheat, thaw in the fridge and reheat on the stove top stirring constantly to keep the cream base from curdling.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb penne pasta

Instructions
 

  • Cook pasta according to packaged directions.

    1. Whole milk always seems to taste best but I don’t think there is much difference if you use 1% or 2 %. 😉

      1. Hi, every time i add the Flour to my butter it clumps up.. i stir constantly as directed. Whats going wrong?

        1. I wish I knew for sure. Your butter melted all the way first? It doesn’t have to be completely smooth, but it shouldn’t be too clumpy. You have it on medium heat?

  5. Very easy and delicious recipie! I’ve made cream sauces in the past that just didn’t work for me. This one worked great! I used powdered garlic (didn’t have fresh on hand), half and half cream as I was trying to use it up, and dill instead of parsley. Would go excellent with chicken!

    I found this recipe the other day on Pinterest and just made it tonight. I added a little more butter (because my family uses skim milk) and simmered all the ingredients a couple of minutes extra for each step.
    This recipe was absolutely heavenly! It was really simple and super delicious!

    1. I’m guessing you might have browned the flour too much. You really want a blonde (or slightly less) roux, so make sure you have your liquids ready before you add the garlic and flour. Adding the liquids is what will stop them from Browning.

    this exceeded my expectations! yum! I used half a cup of whole milk and half a cup of half and half. I didn’t have broth, so I substituted white wine. I added salt and white pepper to taste. I also added a dash of garlic powder to taste, at the end, to emphasize the garlic flavor. I ate this on top of pasta with peas! tastes great with and without the peas mixed in the sauce. this was quick and easy to make. the sauce came together nicely. the consistency was very creamy. my only complaint is that my stomach isn’t big enough to eat more!

    What kind of butter should I use when I cook pasta please? I’m Asian and I don’t usually use butter so I don’t know which one is good.

    1. You don’t cook the pasta in butter. You cook them in boiling water, but you do start making the sauce with butter, 3 tablespoons. I just use cubed butter for that. Hope that helps!! Good luck!

    It was good, I have a big family i doubled up on the ingrinternets. I added a cup more of flour and a cup more of chicken broth. It thicken nicely.

    I don’t like to cook and I’m not very good at it but I love food! This recipe is the easiest white sauce recipe to make and it taste very, very good!! It only needs a few ingredients and once you begin cooking, it goes smoothly and fast. I highly recommend.

    This is good but I don’t know why milk was used instead of heavy cream to make the sauce. I of course made it with the cream. Better with the cream.

    1. Sometimes, when I am out of cream, I will use the milk. And, that is what happened for this recipe. But, both work great 🙂 Thank you for trying it!

    Hi! I just made this today & cut everything to 50% since it’s just for 2 people. Half a box of pasta, 1.5 tb butter, 1 tsp minced garlic, 1.5 tb flour, 1.5 cup broth, 1.5 milk, 1 tsp parsley, and 1/4 cup parmesan cheese.

    End result- it didn’t look like there was enough sauce for half a box of pasta. The sauce was only enough for maybe maybe.. 1/4 of the pasta.

    Did I do something wrong? After I did step 4, the flour made the garlic/butter into little clumpy balls. So I added milk/broth which helped but there was not a lot of sauce to use. Any advice would help! I’m a total newbie in the kitchen.

    BTW, the sauce is delicious! 🙂

    1. The flour does do that, but when you add the milk, it should get smooth. You have to stir constantly. I have never halved it, so I wish I knew about the sauce being enough. You would think it should be? I appreciate you trying it. You could always freeze half & reheat later:) Thank you for letting me know & I am glad that you liked the sauce.     This looks ABSOLUTELY amazing! I do have a question though, is the chicken Broth optional? I don’t believe i have any on hand, but i would love to make this!

    1. I am sure it could be 🙂 I haven’t left it out, but I would substitute some liquid. It could be water or if you have chicken bouillon, I would mix that in with the water. You could use another broth, too, if you have others.

    I made this last night as a side dish. Fairly simple to make and tasty. a whole pound of pasta is too much for my family so i only prepared 8 oz. I still made the whole recipe for sauce. i used a little over half for the pasta and used the rest to pour over some roasted chicken breast. i only had 1% milk and was worried my sauce may not thicken up but it did just fine.

    This sauce was delicious! I used equal parts of Whole milk and Half & Half for a richer taste, but all whole milk would probably be just as good! Very easy to do — I had all of the ingredients prepped (garlic and parsley chopped, flour measured out) beforehand, so it came together very quickly! Thanks for sharing!

    This recipe is awesome! I cut the recipe in half since I’m cooking for 2 and it still made a lot! It’s creamy and so full of flavor. The only change i made besides the AMOUNT is adding a tablespoon of SOUR cream to my sause (i add it to many recipes that have cheese in it). I kept half of it aside and the half that I put with the sauce was too dry so I had to make another batch of sauce. This quantity of sauce might be good for 4 oz of pasta, I’d estimate. 🙂

    Hi, I will try this for my family dinner tomorrow, but the only problem is that I don’t have chicken broth and the store where I will get this has an odd time of opening and closing due to the pandemic, so what do I do?

    1. I would just google what some good substitutes are, then you can see what you have. You could use water & chicken bouillon, if you have it.

  72. Funny story about this recipe, I was getting frustrated because I kept adding flour and it was not getting thicker. Finally I gave up and poured it on pasta. It was ridiculously sweet. I came to read the reviews and nothing said anything about it being ridiculously sweet. So I kind of just SUCKed it up and thought with every bite about how I’ll never make this recipe again. And then it hit me that i didn’t have anywhere to put the powder sugar 2 weeks ago so i put it in a container just like the container i used for my flour…. I think you can figure out the rest….?‍♀️

    it is difficult to find a quick, delicious recipe for a weeknight meal, but this one fits the bill. Added bonus is that we always have these ingredients on hand. Followed the instructions exactly as written. however, you should double the sauce if you have 6 people. There were only two of us and enough sauce left over for about one more. But it’s a keeper! This one will definitely end up in our rotation! Thank you for sharing it.

    1. I haven’t added veggies, but it would depend on how much you add. If it isn’t too much, you shouldn’t have to or you can make 1 1/2 x the amount.

    What to do with leftover rotisserie chicken? Googling “Creamy White Sauce Pasta”, I came across this wonderful, tasty recipe. I had about eight ounces each of Cellentini and Rigatoni. Cooked the pasta according to the package. I heated the chicken with a 1/2 TSP of butter in a large pan. Removed the chicken and used the pan for the recipe. I drained the pasta and put it back in the pasta pan, added and mixed the chicken. I add and stirred the sauce when it was ready.

    This recipe will be my go-to white sauce recipe! Thank you.

    1. You will need liquid, so you will need to add equal part of your choice. I haven’t tried anything else, so not sure if you’d use water or milk.

    2. I used veggie broth (not low sodium) and it turned out great! Kept the part of milk though. So 1 cup veg broth and 1 cup milk.

    This was easy to make. I loved it. I poured over my spinach and cheese tortellini. I have swallowing issues due to cancer, so I use a lot of gravy on just about anything I eat. Makes my food go down easier. So thanks for this yummy recipe.

    WOW! Made this tonight and all my husband said between mouthfuls and a heaping second helping of the angel hair pasta it went over was…”winning” and “keep this recipe or put it in ur memory” hahahaha!! Such a simplistic sauce yet sophisticated enough for any dish u would use a nice creamy white sauce for…i did add some lemon juice to it to play up the flavor profile a little…was suuuuuper gooood….our recently turned picky toddler even enjoyed this and ate it all!! He said mmmm mmmmm lol..happy mama!! Thx for a “winning” sauce that will go into my “memory bank” and be a regularly used delicious sauce.

    Easy to make and I had all the ingredients for a last minute pasta dish. I added sauted shrimp to top it off. My husband kept saying, “restaurant quality”. He had 3 servings.     I’ve made this recipe a dozen times as my family loves it!! One of the reasons I love it so much is because it doesn’t call for heavy cream and is quick to make on our busy nights. I use 1% milk, FF chicken broth, and add red pepper flakes for an extra kick. I always make it with chicken but tonight I added spinach, sundried tomatoes and shrimp and WOW!! Super yummy!       I made this for the first time ever. Perfect dish for Lent. I halved the pasta and made 2/3rds of the sauce for extra creaminess since it is just the two of us.     Great sauce recipe! I added shrimp and a little onion. I ended up using mozzarella cheese instead of Parmesan since that is all I had on hand. It was really creamy. Saved the recipe for future use.

    I’ve made this about three times before and never added parsley because we never had it. Today I added a bit less than what the recipe says and it does not add a nice flavor. It was a brand new bottle so I don’t know what happened. It was also a lot thicker than the other times

    Adding 1 cup broth and 1 cup milk to 3 tablespoons of flour made for a very very thick sauce. Adding another cup of milk made it much more manageable.

    If you want a super thick sauce, follow the instructions.

    Overall, pretty good. A few modifications makes it excellent.

    1. I usually just do a few shakes of salt to start and then add from there if I feel it needs more. If measuring it out, maybe 1/8 tsp and go from there. If that’s not enough, gradually add a little more in.

    1. This recipe makes enough for about 6 servings… depending on how large the servings are, you may want to 1.5x the recipe. You can adjust the servings on the recipe card on the post. If you have a group of adults who may eat larger portions, you could increase the servings a bit. If there are children or others who may not eat as much, the 6 servings it makes may be enough too. It might also depend on if you are serving side dishes with it, etc. You can also save leftovers in the fridge for 3-5 days and have it for lunches or another dinner later if you do double it and have extra.

    1. Just depending on how large of portions are served, 4 may be a better number for some… it may stretch for 6 for others (especially if children are eating too). There is a feature on the recipe card that you can adjust the amount, so you can slide that up a bit if you want to make more too! 🙂

    1. I would recommend using all-purpose, but since there is such a small amount of flour in the white sauce, you can probably get away with it. I haven’t tried using self-rising flour so I’m not sure how it would alter flavor/texture, but you could certainly give it a try!
