Notes

Recipe Tips.
  • This is an easy recipe to add vegetables to. We often mix in peas or broccoli florets.
  • This recipe freezes super well, so we usually double the recipe so we have one to freeze for later.
  • For added flavor and texture, sauté 2 tablespoons butter with ½ cup panko breadcrumbs and sprinkle it on top before baking.
Prep ahead of time. Assemble as instructed, except don’t top with the cheese or bake. Instead, cover it tightly with plastic wrap and place it in the fridge for up to 24 hours. To freeze, wrap it again with foil and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw if needed, and add the cheese before baking.
Store leftovers in an airtight container(s) in the fridge for up to 3 days, or in the freezer for 2-3 months.

First recipe I ever tried from lil luna. Love the flavors and easy recipe. When I need to take a dinner to a neighbor or friend, this is my go to recipe. I love all of the other recipes too.

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

So so happy to hear that! Thank you for making the recipe. I’m glad it was a hit!

  2. Sun says:

Is the nutritional information for the whole dish or just one serving size? Oh also I made this for my family last night and we loved it! Leftovers for tonight!

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

It would be for a serving size. This recipe says it serves 8, so if you divided the casserole into 8 portions, that would be the nutrition info. Chances are everything might be less if you had more than 8 servings from the dish. Hope that helps!

  3. Bella says:

This recipe was pretty good. It would be good for a group meal. It should please most people. I was able to use leftovers of baked chicken and thin whole wheat spaghetti noodles (as a linguini substitute.) I did add drained peas and carrots (microwaved from frozen) and just a sprinking of panko for a little crunch on top. The main recipe can be tweaked as suggested in the notes. I was afraid all the soup and sour cream would be too much but it worked out just fine. A likely crowd pleaser I will probably make again.

This dish was absolutely fantastic!! But had to halve it as I am single but that was more than enough for myself a neighbor and a couple of servings for the freezer!!! I enjoy your website so much as the recipes are simple but impressive!!! Keep up the excellent work and enjoy all of that little family!!!!

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Thank you so much!! So glad to hear you enjoyed the dish!

  5. Jenny says:

The 16 ounces of linguine is that before or after it is cooked?

  6. Jessica says:

    4 stars
Great taste, everyone enjoyed! Reduced chicken and used less pasta (the box was 14.5) otherwise made as written.

  7. Darlene says:

I have made this recipe several times using left over chicken, turkey and even shredded pork turns out perfect every time. Sometimes I use cream of chicken, or cream of mushroom, and also used cream of cheddar soup. You just can’t go wrong.

Made this tonight for dinner. Only change I made was the pasta (I used angel hair, as I didn’t have any linguini). Already added this to my favorites! Thanks for a tasty recipe!!

My family loves this meal! There is nothing like creamy, cheesy pasta. I use either rotisserie or slow-cooked chicken, and the fact that you can make it ahead and simply top and bake when it is time is perfect!

    CHICKEN TETRAZZINI
First of all, I must mention, that I am not a very good cook. Every Christmas I have a big brunch with various simple dishes and charcuterie foods. The one dish that always stresses me out is making a dish for my two picky eater daughters-in-law, both are vegetarians (but will eat chicken). With sweat on my brow (lol) I began making this Lil’ Luna recipe on Christmas Eve. It actually went together very nicely but my concern was, ‘will it taste good…will anyone even eat it… Yikes! Remembering that I ruined canned sweet potatoes one Thanksgiving Day! Christmas morning arrived and I popped it in the oven and served it to the group. The entry was a success and so delicious that I have made it often since…Easy-Peasy and yummy too!

This will be my go to tetrazzini recipe from now on. My husband immediately commented how good it was and wondered what I had done differently. I told him it was a new recipe. Thank you for sharing.

  21. dawn neal says:

    How much sour cream?
How many noodles? The whole box?
Did I miss the amounts used?

  22. Anna wixom says:

Just thought I would share a good way to make the chicken for this dish. We use chicken thighs. Sprinkle each side with zatarain’s blackened seasoning and cook 2 minutes each side on high. Puts a great crust on the chicken and just adds great flavor. Then chop up the chicken. Thank you for this recipe. We loved it!

  23. Kaye says:

This is the best!! I use fettuccini noodles and stir some Monterey Jack cheese into the mixture. I bake it halfway before adding the mozzarella to the top so it doesn’t burn. We love this!!!

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Thanks for sharing what you do! I’m so glad you enjoyed the recipe!

  24. Suzanne says:

Have you ever added diced pimentos to this?

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

I don’t typically, but you absolutely could! And it would taste delicoius!

  25. Kelli Wagner says:

I love this recipe. I use egg noodles, instead of linguine and add minced garlic! So good, so yummy and creamy.

  26. Joy Henault says:

I actually made it all on the stove top. I boiled my 1 pound of pasta, drained it and then put all the other ingredients in the pasta pot. I cooked it all together until all the cheese melted and it was heated through. Delicious!!

  27. Missy Marsh says:

Just made this last night and it was fantastic! Definitely a keeper. Thank you for sharing so many great and easy meals! I will need to cut the recipe in half for my family of three next time. As far as freezing this, it seems as though your instructions are for freezing prior to cooking. If that is correct, can we freeze the leftovers AFTER it’s made?

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Yes, you could freeze the leftovers too. Wrap it tightly and then I’d just defrost it in the fridge overnight and then reheat in the oven when you want to eat it again.

  30. C Crain says:

Hands down the best chicken tetrazzini recipe ever! Always a huge hit! I’ve made it for work potluck, week night dinners, and comfort food for friends!

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Yay! I’m so glad this recipe has been such a hit!

  31. Sheila says:

Made this last night and it was yummy. My husband even had 2 helpings. I did use gluten free cream of chicken soup and gluten free pasta. Also added Italian seasoning, paprika, cayenne pepper, onion powder and threw i peas. Thanks for the recipe!

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

You’re welcome! Thanks for sharing how you tweaked things. So glad you all enjoyed the recipe!

  32. Briana says:

    5 stars
YUM!! This is delicious! Even my 2 year old couldn’t get enough which is rare, so that’s a massive compliment to this recipe. I used my homemade cream of chicken soup in it which takes it to another level.

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Oh that makes me so happy to hear!! Toddler approved! Thanks for sharing!

  33. Kathy C says:

    3 stars
Don’t get me wrong, this was a decent dish, but the flavor wasn’t 5 stars… it was 3+, maybe 4. For ease of preparation, it was 5 stars, for sure! I’m comparing this to another tetrazzini recipe in which you make a roux from scratch, add more spices, and was fantastic, so maybe that’s not fair, but since I know there’s better, gotta be honest.

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Thanks for the feedback and for giving the recipe a try.

  34. Becky says:

What do you think you could substitute for the sour cream?

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Plain greek yogurt is a great substitution. You could also try cream cheese.

  35. Amy says:

    5 stars
So good! Added peas. Broccoli would have been great!

  36. S Fitzpatrick says:

    5 stars
I added peas to it and it was fabulous!

  37. Margaret says:

I’m making this recipe for our family Christmas get together and I was asking people to bring a side to go with it. What would you suggest I was thinking a veggie dish something like vegetable medley. it would be easy enough to transport to someone’s house. I was also thinking, garlic Tuscan bread and a salad. Any other ideas for a side would be most welcome. Thank you.

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Those sides sound incredible and would pair wonderfully with the tetrazzini! We love to serve cheesy garlic bread or breadsticks, a Caesar or side salad or a veggie of some sort… asparagus or roasted broccoli or Brussel sprouts. A fruit salad is yummy too. But I think what you’ve got planned sounds amazing!

  38. Trish says:

    5 stars
This recipe is so easy and tastes soooo good. Everyone that I have made it for raves about it!

  39. Eve Malloy says:

Literally the most amazing recipe on the internet! So easy and sooo delicious. My entire family craves this every week! I don’t ask what they want for dinner because they always say chicken tetrazzini. I serve it with peas and garlic knots.

  40. Mandi says:

    5 stars
Made this a couple of nights ago, everyone loved it. Made exactly as written, heats up great. I think it is even better the next day! Thank you!

  41. Andrea Palmer says:

Can this recipe be done in the crockpot for the chicken before baking with the noodles?

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

I’m sure it could. I haven’t made this one in the crock pot. We do have a Crock Pot Chicken Alfredo, so you could look at that for an idea of how to tweak this for a crock pot. You’ll have to let us know how it turns out if you try it in the slow cooker. https://lilluna.com/crock-pot-chicken-alfredo/

  42. Marie says:

  49. Melanie says:

This is a good recipe but y’all forgot to tell people to add in the chicken, LOL. All joking aside it’s a wonderful dish. I’ve been making my my father’s version of chicken spaghetti probably close to 40 years. Everyone loves my chicken spaghetti, but this recipe is even better than my father’s recipe by my own admission. Well done Lil Luna. My community thanks you!

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

I’m so glad to hear you loved the recipe! In step 3, we did mention to add in the chicken with the rest of the sauce. It should be in there! 🙂 Thank you for the kind review and that means a lot that this recipe is as enjoyed as a family one. Thanks again!

      1. MB says:

        5 stars
It’s easy to miss adding the chicken based on how the instructions are worded -> “chicken, soup” could be read as “chicken soup” could maybe think about rearranging the way the ingredients are listed in step 3 🙂

      2. Lil'Luna Team says:

        Thanks for the feedback!

I made this with chicken the first time and it was so good and so easy to make! The second time I made it I used 2 cans of cream of shrimp soup, about a pound of small shrimp and a 1/2 cup clam juice and 1/2 cup of chicken broth and it was so good with the shrimp and a nice little change on the same recipe!

  77. AC says:

    5 stars
I make this at least once per month, more in the fall and winter months bc the kids love it and the leftovers (if any) are just as delicious the next day. I substitute cheddar for the mozzarella, and add a pinch more salt, but this is in my family’s top 3 meals requested all year round. Thank you so much for the excellent recipe!

  78. Phil says:

    5 stars
This was a really easy recipe and delicious. Definitely substitute French onion dip for sour cream. Adds so much flavor. Not too much onion at all.

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

That sounds yummy! Thanks for sharing what you did. Glad you enjoyed the recipe!

  79. Tanya says:

    5 stars
Absolutely one of the best recipes ever!! Very versatile. You can use any pasta you have on hand. I also make it with leftover turkey or chicken. Easy and quick to make.

  80. LW says:

Great recipe. I added chopped spinach to make it a one dish meal with a vegetable. Served with buttery corn bread.

  81. Faye Nobles says:

I made this recipe to feed 2 hungry college men. I did use an entire chicken, not just the breasts, but next time, I will only use the the thighs and the breasts. I think the thighs add to the flavor of the chicken. I served garden peas with the tetrazinni because that is their favorite green vegetable.

What was not consumed that night, I sent back to their dorms with them (keeping a small serving for me). Warmed up the next day, it was even better! My college grandsons agreed with me. I am sure they will request it in the future.

I may cut back on the amount of cheese topping as it was ‘greasy’ on top.

  82. Rhonda Banner says:

    5 stars
I had to make a few tweaks, because I only had about 1 1/4 cups of sour cream, didn’t have any mozzarella (I just used more Parmesan), and had only 1 can of cream of chicken. So I used that, and 1 can of cream of celery, and I made it with fettuccine, because that’s what I had in the cupboard. Yet, it was STILL delicious. 🙂

  83. Linda lamb says:

Making tonight. I’ve made this recipe before, it’s really good and it’s easy to make.

  84. Sharon haun says:

Can I use heavy whipping cream instead of sour cream

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

You could try. The texture would be more runny I imagine. Another good sub for sour cream is plain greek yogurt if you have that on hand.

  85. Monika says:

    5 stars
Great recipe. So easy. I used Greek yogurt instead of sour cream. Added mushrooms, Peas, thyme, and a little garlic salt instead of regular salt fot more flavor. Was a hit.

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Sounds delicious! Thanks for sharing what you did and giving the recipe a try!

  86. Brittani Smith says:

One of the best recipies I have made yet. The only changes I made were mixing soups (cream of chicken and mushroom), adding creole seasoning, parsley and mozzarella cheese to the sauce in addition to the cheese the recipe calls for on top.

Yum! Sounds delicious. I’m so glad you enjoyed the recipe!

I mixed everything except the noodles, chicken first. After that is all blended together I added the noodles and chicken. I also added 8 ounces of fresh sliced mushrooms. Other than that I followed the recipe and it turned out very good.

Thanks for sharing what you did. I’m sure the mushrooms were a delicious addition! Glad you enjoyed the recipe.

Wow! This is good! Whole family loved it.
I don’t have cream of chicken so I subbed cream of mushroom and it was wonderful. The cheese turns a nice light brown and slightly crispy on the edges. Super good!

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Cream of mushroom totally works too. I’m so glad the recipe was a hit! Thanks for giving it a try.

We make this recipe regularly at our house. My kids love it! After making it many times I realized that the 1/2 cup of butter can totally be left out. In fact I prefer it left out. There’s plenty of other fats 🙂 I use rotisserie chicken and also add some garlic and onion powder to the sauce. I love easy family meals like this. Thank you!

My husband RAVES about this dish! Perfectly thought out! The only change I have to make is use cream of mushroom rather than cream of chicken because my local grocery store doesn’t carry gluten free cream of chicken. I use gluten free pasta too, of course because of a wheat intolerance (Celiac).

    Thank you for sharing!

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Yummy! A few changes I made: I addded about a cup of a cup and a half of frozen petite peas, I also mixed a handful of cheddar and mozzarella in with the noodles and pasta, and then also topped the casserole with cheese before baking. Lastly, I added about a teaspoon or so of garlic powder into the mixture and added some green onions on top when it came out. Wonderful!! Thanks

    1. LilLunaTeam says:

Sounds delicious! I love all of your additions! Thanks so much for sharing what you did. I’ll have to try it out!

Easy to make with ingredients on hand, just like most of the recipes on this site.
    – Very flavourful thanks to the cheeses, broth, and soup. I also thoroughly seasoned the chicken.
    – I undercooked the noodles slightly as recommended by others in the comments to avoid overcooking during baking. The texture ended up being just right!
    – I used the pasta pot to combine the chicken and wet ingredients rather than the medium bowl suggested in the recipe. (The noodles were draining in a colander.) I didn’t dirty an additional item and a medium bowl would never have fit everything.

    Points of concern
    – The butter was softened to room temp but I found it hard to combine with the other ingredients. It presented as medium-sized chunks throughout. Is this correct? Can I do something to improve how the butter combines?
    – I used a 9×13 dish and felt like it wasn’t big enough, even after trying to flatten everything down with a spatula. While I was cooking, the cheese and cream started bubbling over the edge of my dish. I quickly put another pan underneath. How deep of a 9×13 should I be using? Mine are all about 2 inches deep.

Overall it was a great meal that both my boyfriend and I enjoyed with a generous side of peas and peach dump cake à la mode for dessert!

    1. LilLunaTeam says:

Thanks so much for sharing what you did! I appreciate it! For the butter – I would try having it soften a little more. You want it at about the same consistency as the cream of chicken soup. Then it should blend with those creamy ingredients a lot better. It’s true – some 9 x 13 pans are deeper than others. Mine is a little deeper than 2 inches. You can still use your 9 x 13 pan and not fill it so much and then put any leftover in a smaller 8 x 8 pan and bake those at the same time. Hope this helps!

      1. Melissa M says:

Thank you so much for the suggestions! I will definitely keep it in mind for the future because this recipe is going to happen again 🙂

      2. LilLunaTeam says:

I’m missing a can of cream of chicken what can I do or do I need it

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Hi Amy! How did the recipe turn out? There are a bunch of homemade cream of chicken soup recipes out there you can google. If you are ever out of the cans, you can always whip that up real fast (usually consists of butter, flour, chicken stock, milk and seasonings). Sour cream can be substituted for it too but doesn’t have the chicken based flavor. And where this recipe already has sour cream in it, I’d recommend just making a homemade one!

  143. Joanne P. says:

Have you experimented to find a way to make it healthier? Way too many calories, and it’s too high in sodium, potassium, and fat.

Perhaps a substitute for the cream soup would be a good place to start.

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

I’m sure there are ways you could make it healthier. A from scratch cream soup for sure, sour cream could be swapped for plain greek yogurt, fat free mozzarella cheese, etc. Not sure how that would alter the nutrition facts exactly, but would certainly lighten it up.

I was wondering if there might be something else I could use in place of the
    cream of chicken soup?

    1. LilLunaTeam says:

I’m so glad you love it so much! You can use any other cream based soup such as cream of mushroom, cream of celery, etc. If you don’t want to use those condensed soups you can always substitute sour cream for the cream of chicken soup. It won’t have as much of the chicken flavor but it will give the recipe the creaminess it needs. Hope this helps!

I made this yesterday and it was superb!! I followed the directions exactly except I added the cheeses to the mix keeping 1cup of the mozzarella cheese for the top. 55 minutes including prep time? No way. Frying the chicken breasts the way I do it (salt and peppered, floured, browned both sides in some shortening, then covered and simmered) took at least 45 minutes. Let the chicken cool enough to cut it up in nice small bite size pieces. Give yourself at least an hour prep time, then almost an hour in the oven. 55 minutes prep and oven time became a good 2 hours. It was so worth it. You will love it.

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Sounds like a tasty way to cook the chicken! Thanks for sharing. I’m so happy that you liked the recipe!

  163. John says:

Might want to add a splash or two of Worcheshire sauce …the recipes back in the 70s seem to have a bit added for flavor. When growing up, mom always added chopped onions and celery and usually a handful of peas. She probably did that because I never ate many vegetables. Lol

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Yes, you can certainly add in whatever seasonings/flavorings you prefer. Your mom was a smart lady to sneak in those veggies somehow! 😉

It does take longer all together than just 55 mins. Your chicken has to cook which can be 30 minutes. I would say Cook your chicken before hand and freeze it or something so it is faster.

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Yes, if starting with cooked chicken, it takes about 55 minutes. If starting with raw chicken, you will want to allow extra time to cook the chicken.

Just let thaw in the fridge overnight before baking in the oven. Hope this helps!

Tried this last and it was great but have a lot leftover…can i freeze it?

      2. Lil'Luna Team says:

Yes! You definitely can! Cover tightly and freeze. And then let it defrost in the fridge the night before you are going to bake/reheat it again.

    2. Charlene says:

Is says in the comments can freeze. You can also FREEZE this recipe. Just make as instructed, cover tightly and freeze for up to 2 months. Just let thaw in the fridge overnight before baking in the oven.

      1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Yes, there’s lots of options when it comes to freezing the recipe. It’s a great make ahead recipe.

I always wanted to make this dish but the recipe was too much.this one is simple enough to quickly make and good enoughTo share. Thank you 😊

  169. Wendi Martinez says:

What if you don’t have cream of chicken

    1. LilLunaTeam says:

Sour cream will work as a substitution for cream of chicken. It won’t have a chicken-forward flavor, but one cup of sour cream creates the same texture and body as a can of cream of chicken soup. Hope this helps!

I have read all the comments of this wonderful delicious dish but not one person has asked the following question! Do you bake it covered or uncovered? Please, somebody answer quickly as I am preparing it for company tomorrow (Sunday Feb. 28, 2021). Many thanks. Linda from Oregon

    1. LilLunaTeam says:

You can bake it uncovered in the oven. I’m sorry I wasn’t able to see this before your Sunday dinner. I hope all went well and that everyone enjoyed it!

What a simple and tasty recipe to serve on a cold snowy day! Like everyone, I tweaked it a bit to our taste (added mushrooms, onions, & garic) but still so easy to throw together, Canned chunk chicken makes it even quicker. Thank you for what is bound to be a regular part of our meal planning.

Wonderful Recipe. I followed it to a “T” except…I mixed parmesan cheese with Italian seasoned bread crumbs with more parmesan cheese as an extra topping. I baked it until top was really crispy. It was DIVINE! MY HUSBAND THANKS YOU! Great recipe. I do think the seasoned breadcrumbs and more parmesan added a little extra to the texture and taste to the whole final presentation and taste.

My mother used to make this, and she always added sliced black olives, so I will too. I’m watching carbs, so I’ll use Liviva shirataki noodles instead of regular pasta. And I will definitely add some garlic, mushrooms, a little bit of heavy cream, and a dash of white wine.

  184. Amy says:

Can this recipe be cooked using a crockpot?

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

I haven’t tried with this specific recipe, but I am sure it would work well in the crock pot.

So I’ve made this a few times and it’s always been awesome. I always add bacon but I’ve always added water to the cans of cream of chicken. I’m making this again tonight, do I not add water? I’m always so confused when recipes call for cream of chicken on whether I add water or not.

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

No, you don’t need to add water. If you did, it would most likely be an ingredient in the recipe. The broth adds liquid in this specific recipe.

I have made this recipe several times depending on what type of meat I have leftover is what I add, pork, ham, chicken. The only other change I make is I add 1 each cheddar cheese soup and cream of chicken or cream of mushroom, this recipe is our favorite….

      1. LilLunaTeam says:

I’m so glad it’s a favorite! It definitely is a staple dish at our house! I bet the added cheddar cheese soup makes it even more cheesy and creamy!

So creamy and cheesy! We halfed the recipe for our small family, but kept the amount of cheese the same. Quick to make, family friendly. I would recommend adding some frozen peas or broccoli, or serving with a side of asparagus. Will definitely be making this again!

  223. Suze says:

Wow, where has this recipe been all my life?! It will be going on the rotation for sure as it was a big hit. This is clearly one of those classics you can’t mess up; I didn’t have everything as stated, only had gluten-free spaghetti, used Greek yogurt in place of sour cream, and added my own seasonings (ground rosemary and thyme). Everyone went back for seconds, and my hubby claimed the leftovers for tomorrow’s lunch. Thank you!

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

Woohoo!! I love to hear that! Great substitutions! Thank you for sharing that!

I make this A LOT!!! It’s one of my go to’s when I’m lost and can’t think of anything for dinner. I cheat I use a HUGE bowl that we use for Halloween candy and put gloves on and mix it that way then throw in a pan. 🤪 Who ever came up with this god bless you! 🥰

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

LOL!! That’s what I love to hear! Thank you so much!

  226. Chrystal Corliss says:

I love this recipe, but I’m always boggled by the amount of food it makes. I filled two 9×13 pans the first time I made it. Since then I started using one huge 11x15ish pan. Am I doing something wrong? Whole 16 oz box of linguine?

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

Hmm..I fit mine all in one pan. It’s filled to the top, but it fits. Yes, I use the whole box.

  227. Jennifer says:

If I wanted to make this in a crock pot, how long/what temperature would you suggest?

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

I would do low for 3-4 hours 🙂

  228. Judy Mote says:

    5 stars
fantastic!! I didn’t have parmesan so used cheddar and mozzarella. Would be wonderful for leftover turkey and might even work with a small can of canned beef in a pinch.

So yummy! Can’t wait to make again.

If you halve the recipe will cooking time go down?

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

Glad you like it! It may not take as long, but I am not sure exactly the time. I’ve never halved it.

    2. Chrystal Corliss says:

Since all the ingredients are precooked, I’d think you could knock 10-15 minutes off at least.

  232. Alice Rayne says:

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

  233. Sandy says:

It doesn’t say whether to bake covered or uncovered. I don’t want the cheese on top to get too brown. Any feedback? I’m going to try to cover all but last 19 minutes to brown.

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

I do not cover, but you can, if you are worried about it getting too brown.

  234. Mag says:

    4 stars
This was so so good and a hit at my house. The reason I gave it a 4 star is because I adjusted the flavour as it was a little bland for me by adding seasonings to the soup mixture- I added garlic powder (about 2 tsp) and Italian seasoning (about 1 tbsp) and it was perfect. Will definitely be making again!

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

Thank you for trying it 🙂 Glad you will!

  235. Rose Y says:

Thank you to the people that actually made this and posted a useful comment. Majority of people read reviews to see if dish is worth making or if they should make adjustments.
That being said the veggie idea was great, I also didn’t bake mine because I’m not a fan of casseroles.

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

Thanks for saying that! Veggies are a great option for sure!

  236. Cindy Cady says:

Looks good, but way toomuch sodium. With all the sodium iN the soup, and the cheese, you ABSOLUTELY do not need to add another teaspoon of salt. You could also use low sodium broth, and Unsalted butter. This would cut way back on the sodium, while still being delicious. TOO MUCH sodium is one of the worst things you can do for your health. Cheers!

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

You can definitely do those things to lessen the sodium. Hope you try it 🙂

  237. Allison Orton says:

This was very very good! Thanks for sharing! I was gonna go by what you used, but i did not have all of the same things, so i had no choice but to use what I had. I used 1 can of cr of chicken and 1 of cr of celery (gave it a veggie too). I only had 8 oz of sour cream, so i used that. I only had vegetable broth, so i used it instead. Didn’t have mozzarella ch, so i used colby jack and monterrey. I used spaghetti noodles. Oh my, what a very tasty meal. First time making, a hit with a picky 16 year old. A side salad was perfect. He hates peas and mushrooms. Thanks darling!

I added English peas to it, but that is all i changed. my husband raved! It was very good. For me: It made more than a 9 x 13, and a large bowl was actually needed to mix everything.

I cooked the chicken, green and red peppers in garlic and butter. I also used Monterey and mozzarella cheeses and left out the parm. Even my super picky toddlers enjoyed this! This will definitely go on our regular menu.

I added sauteed fresh mushrooms and this was just about the best thing I’ve ever tasted, and my whole family agreed! Lots of calories even with light sour cream and low fat soup (i used one cr of chicken and one cr of mushroom), but it will definitely be my “go-TO” meal for company from now on.

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

Yay! I love to hear that! Yes, more calories than I want to count, but so good & easy!

  270. Chicken tetrazzini…doesnt say how to prepare the chicken

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

Just prepare it however you like to cook your chicken. I like to either bake some of fry some up, when I buy it, so it’s ready for me. I will just season with salt & pepper & maybe some Italian seasoning or garlic pepper. Then it’s ready to shred or dice. Hope that helps 🙂

has any one cut this recipe in half? Its just my husband and I, and well we like left overs I think there would still be to much. Would it still cook it for 40-45 minutes or do you think I should shorten the cooking time? Thanks!

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

I have not, but you definitely could. Since, the pan will be smaller, the baking time will take a little longer, but I am not positive about how much longer. Maybe check it at the 45 min, but then add 5 min at a time, until done.

This recipe was Similar to another from Pioneer Woman that i really like, but so Much better!

I cooked up my chicken in the instantpot and reserved the cooking liquid to use as my “broth”. I also cooked my noodles in the InstantPot, just making the recipe that much quicker.

I did make tWo changes. 1) rather than add butter to the sauce, i added butter (reduced to just 2 Tbs) right to the hot noodles and stirred until melted, then i Combined my sauce and mixed everything together. Then after topping with cheese i 2) added a sprinkling of garlic bread seasoning (parmesan cheese, salt and herbs) to the top for color, texture and flavor. It was so good!

this is my first TIME TO hear about tetrazinni recipe. is this like basically a pasta in milk but baked?
how is it different from using white bechamel sauce? just add a bit of milk or water…

can i use olive spread instead of pure butter? i tend to do this in my baking cakes…not so great but good enough….

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

A bechamel sauce is made by whisking milk with flour, but this sauce doesn’t have either. It’s a basic white sauce. I have not tried using olive spread, so I can’t tell you for sure how it will turn out.

It was fantastic, and we have just enough leftover for tomorrow night. Thanks.

I thin-sliced a red, orange and yellow bell pepper and softened them near the end of the chicken cooking phase. replaced the sour cream with non-fat plain greek yogurt, added frozen peas and mushrooms. topped it with half the amount of cheese and used low-fat Mozzarella. the entire family is in love. thank you for providing the basis!

I just put a glass dish of it in the oven. I added bag of cooked broccoli, minced onion, 1/4 tsp. of nutmeg and 1/2 tsp. of minced garlic. It looked and smelled delish!!

This truly was the perfect recipe! Very easy to make and quite filling. The flavor is rich and makes it seem like you were cooking all day. I used a packet of rotisserie chicken from Costco, as I was cooking for a building crew who were hungry “NOW”. My husband came back into the kitchen when done, asking me store some leftovers for his lunch.

I love when they say they want leftovers! This really is a crowd pleaser for all. I am so glad they liked it! Thank you!

I’ve made this a few times—so yummy! And there is always a lot left over, so that’s a bonus. I’ll be making it in a few days.. wondering if you would recommend trying it in a slow cooker? Or would it turn out too runny? Of course my chicken would already be cooked and shredded; and I probably wouldn’t add the pasta till towards the end.

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

I am sure that would work fine. I personally haven’t with this specific recipe, but I don’t see why not 🙂

This is so good!! Every time I make a big pot of something good.. like this, my grown kids just happen to show up!! LOL this is a winner for sure. Had to laugh about your pickle remark… I have an obsession with them also. Ever time we do a big gro .shop… I have at least 3 jars of dill pickles. Hubby says” I know your not, expecting!

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

LOL!! We love this recipe, too! Thank you so much!

Can the Easy Chicken Tettrazzini recipe be doubled by just doubling everything or what? I’ve got a potluck at church on the 23rd of this month and it’s a “spaghetti” theme. I thought this recipe would be a great alternative to take. My friend made this and raved about it.

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

Yes..just double all the ingredients & maybe add to an 11×17 pan 🙂 I am glad you friend raved about it!! It will be a hit!

2 TB of Parmesan cheese. I just must still be asleep but what’s a TB, table spoon? It just doesn’t seem to be enough.

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

Yes, tablespoon 🙂 It’s the perfect amount, since most is mozzarella.

  369. Ashleigh says:

What size cream of chicken cans? Looks really delicious!

I wonder how many cans of canned chicken equal 4 chicken breasts?? Have you ever used canned chicken for this??

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

I haven’t, but you totally could. I am not sure how many would equal 4 chicken breasts. Really, it could be as much or as little as you like. You could add a few cans & if you want more chicken, you could add more. No wrong amount 🙂 Hope you like it.

  374. Dan says:

    5 stars
We made the recipe. It was delicious. It would help if you gave weight on the chicken instead of the quantity. There is a large variance in chicken breast size.

    Thanks

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

I am glad you liked it 🙂 Really, the chicken amount can vary. If you like chicken, you can add more or you can always add less. My amounts vary also, I usually use a package with 4 chicken breasts in it.

  375. Crystal says:

What s the best way to cook the chicken?

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

I like to just add some oil to a pan & cook it that way, until browned & cooked through. Add some salt & pepper. You can in a crock pot. There are lots of ways 🙂

      1. Crystal Newman says:

My husband doesn’t care for chicken but I thought this looked so good! Here is what I did. I had 3 pork steaks which I trimmed, cut up in cubes and cooked in olive oil. Instead of the Cream of Chicken, I used 1 can of Cream of Celery and 1 can of Cream of Mushroom. Instead of the chicken broth, I used beef broth. The rest of the ingredients were the same. I did have some fresh grate Parmesan cheese.
My husband absolutely loved this and this is a lot for two people. LOL! We have leftovers and we have enough to freeze half for another week or so. Loved it!

I’m only using 2 breasts, cooked in a pan with onion powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper on low until fully cooked. I will then use this recipe, it yields about 1.5 cans of cream of chicken condensed soup. Add in about 12oz of al dente pasta (gf overcooks VERY easily into a gummy mess!), viola. Deliciousness!
homemade cream of chicken condensed soup:
In a sauce pan…(My kids both hound me for any extras whenever I make this as a base for other recipes!)
        1 tablespoon butter
        2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 cup warm water (crush the 3 cubes in a ziploc and put in here or use powdered boullion to taste! Easy does it, you dont want it too salty!)
        1 cup milk
        3 chicken boullion cubes
        1.5 tsp onion powder

      3. Kristyn Merkley says:

Sounds great! Thank you so much for sharing that!

The pioneer woman says to cook the spaghetti al dente before baking chicken spaghetti. Do I cook the noodles all the way through or do I do them Al dente since I am baking the noodles again in the oven?

How big are the chicken breasts you’re using? It seems these days a chicken breast looks like it’s been through the super soldier treatment Captain America got, and I’d hate to end up using far too much chicken my first time out.

I used ONE cup of sour cream (out of laziness that I shall call necessity, not for dietary reasons) and it was still AMAZING. Honestly, I didn’t even miss it – sauce was still creamy and thick, and just as delicious. I just wanted to share that if you were (like me) caught with only one cup of sour cream, tetrazzini can still go on!

Very good! I don’t boil my pasta for baked dishes, but soak it in warm salted water for 45 minutes. It never overcooks & saves a cooking pot & a heated kitchen. Since I portion & freeze leftovers, I added plenty of chicken broth (2 cups). Surprisingly, after letting it stand for 15 minutes, it firmed up very well. It would have been dry with only 1/2 cup of broth. Between the broth & soup salt is unnecessary. I also added 1/2 t each of poultry & Italian seasonings.

Thank you for sharing what you did 🙂

Made this tonight. It is delicious. My husband had 2 helpings! I used cut up rotisserie chicken and added mushrooms. I boiled the linguine to a very al dente state because it bakes for 40 additional minutes. Turned out cheesy and perfect….tons of flavor. Will definitely make again. No, not the healthiest recipe, but we all need to splurge sometimes!

So delicious! Read reviews. Used 1 rotisserie chicken and added sautéed onions, garlic, and mushrooms. I used white wine instead of chicken broth. Reduced to 1 cup sour cream, used 2 can cream of chicken and 1 can cream of celery, added 1 bag frozen chopped broccoli to noodles during last minute, and under cooked noodles by 2 minutes. I also broke up linguini noodles. Stirred in fresh basil after all mixed up and topped it with shredded pepper jack cheese and Panko bread crumbs. So flavorful. My son requested this once a week! Highly recommended ❣️

This is amazing! I made it in the morning and came home (through a miserable blizzard) to it already baked in the evening- perfect comfort food. I did add some garlic powder blend to the sauce, and some chopped spinach for color and nutrition. Love it!

Made this with chicken a few weeks ago and everyone loved it, and I mean everyone all the adults and all the kids. Tonight I made it to take over for a family get together and substituted shrimp and cream of shrimp soup for the chicken and cream of chicken soup plus added mushrooms. I already got request for the Christmas and New Year’s day meals.

This Tetrazzini sauce recipe was outstanding!
Indtead of chicken, I used grouss, and instead of noodles I used wild rice. Sadly there wasnt much for left overs. After Thanksgiving I plan to make this usind left over turkey 🙂

Hello! I was wondering if anyone has tired or would try to substitute the pasta for zucchini noodles? Also how would you recommend them to be prepared for baking?

    Thanks!

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

I personally haven’t, but I bet they would taste good! I would think that you can just cut/shred the zucchini, maybe squeeze the liquid, then you could just toss them in to your prepared sauce? Just a guess though? Good luck!

Awesome dish! Not a fan of sour cream, but tried it anyway. Opened a can of cream of celery by mistake, so I used that and a can of cream of chicken. Added a touch of chicken bouillon. Both of us LOVED it! Cut the leftovers into serving sized portions to freeze. Wrapped them in plastic wrap and put them in a Ziploc bag. EVERY SINGLE TIME we had the leftovers, it tasted exactly like the first time. Warmed in the oven, haven’t tried the microwave.

I make a similar dish that does not have sour cream and freezes just fine. I use macaroni, 1 can cream of mushroom soup, broth as in this one or gravy, then I add some (to your taste) green pepper, a small jar of drained pimento, cooked chicken, and shredded cheddar cheese.

I made this and it was so delicious! But I changed the recipe to fit the ingredients I had on hand. I did not use cream of chicken soup and sour cream. I put a whole can of chicken broth instead of the half a can it calls for. I used a 6 oz. package of cream cheese (because cream cheese is a stable in my house, we put it in most everything) and around a cup of greek yogurt. I also added some extra spices (though I did not measure how much): dried basil, garlic powder, and onion powder.

That sounds wonderful!! Thank you for sharing!! I’m glad you liked it!

This dish is marvelous. I made it today and it’s delicious. I did saute’ a small sliced up yellow onion in the butter before adding the rest of the ingredients. I didn’t miss celery but may add it or small peas sometime, but it’s definitely good on its own. For company I would add pimentos for color, but for just me it’s terrific like this. And you can do it all in one pot, drain the pasta in collander and then add all the stuff to that pot to mix before pouring it in the baking dish. I only had to bake for 35 min but left it in the hot oven for an extra 5 min just to be following the recipe. It’s wonderful!

Oh, thank you for letting me know! Those changes all sound wonderful! Thanks again!

Sooooooo….here’s the thing, I made this last night. I added mushrooms. Cooked my chicken in the crockpot then used the broth to boil the noodles. I didn’t have any mozz so I used what I had which was Colby jack. And I added some garlic powder. It was so good, I was told, not asked, but told to make it again tonight. So that’s the thing, this dish should come with a disclaimer “will make your family (husband, daughter 9 and son 4) ravenous wacka-do’s who now only want this for dinner”. Thank you for that. 😉

This looks great! I am trying to find a dish for a church small group meal. How many does this feed?

    1. Lil' Luna says:

I would say a 9×13 can feed 10-12 people, as long as their helpings aren’t huge! If you are taking to a church group, you could maybe double and put in a 11×17 dish. Hope that helps! Thanks!!

I made this tonight. I changed things up a bit, feeling creative after reading some of the comments. I used Hatch Chili grated cheese instead of mozzarella. I added mushrooms and panko bread crumbs like I had read in some of the comments. I used the tops of 2 green onions and cooked it all at 350 degrees for 55 minutes without foil as I like it a bit crunchy. It was great and was a hit.

  487. Anna Lisa Montgomery says:

I am trying out this recipe and I was wondering how do you cook your chicken? Do you boil it or bake it? What kind of spices do you use on the chicken?

    1. Lil' Luna says:

You could cook it however you like. I cook it in the crockpot, I bake it, depending on the day or how much time I have, that determines how I cook it. I like to put a few chicken breasts in the crockpot, after buying it and you could sprinkle with just salt and pepper, or Italian seasoning and I like to shred it, so it’s ready when I need it. You could cut the chicken into cubes and fry them in oil, that way, as well. This recipe is great with shredded chicken or cubed. Hope that helps:)

  488. Jenny Ashton says:

May I make a suggestion? I made this recipe(with a few changes for personal preference) but found it was perfect to what I was looking for. I coated the chicken pieces with one dry Italian dressing mix and olive oil before cooking. Also instead of two cans cream of chicken, use one and a cream of mushroom (with roasted garlic). A family favorite now.

Holy smokes this was good. I did saute an onion and some mushrooms and added in. I also used Greek yogurt instead of sour cream cause that’s what I had in my fridge also with the cream of mushroom soups and broth I omitted extra salt. It was delish!

    1. Lil' Luna says:

Yay!! I wish I liked onions or that’d be a great add in:) Thanks for letting me know!

I made this recipe just as stated and it turned out fantastic! The absolute best part was when my “I don’t eat chicken unless it’s a nugget” daughter tasted her ‘no thank you’ helping, piled her plate full, asked for seconds, and then asked when we could have it again!
I’d planned on putting the leftovers in containers to freeze for individual meals, but there weren’t any. Next time I’m definitely making a double batch, because this has gone on the short list of meals everyone in my house will eat!

    1. Lil' Luna says:

Hi Kristyn! Thank you so much for this recipe. I came across it on Pinterest and it took me right back to childhood when my mom would make this. I made it tonight and it was delicious. I only used 1 cup of sour cream and 2 chicken breasts. I also added in some thyme and summer savory (and peas for a veggie). 3 out of 4 family members highly approved (the fourth is a 4 year old and wouldn’t even taste it because it wasn’t “usual pasketti”). Thanks a million!

  497. Beth says:

Do I use ready-to-serve cream of chicken soup or the kind that is condensed and you add water to make soup?

    1. sarah says:

Im going to make this too i believe its just cream of chicken soup and dont add water to make soup thats where the stalk comes in to loosen the soup 🙂

    2. Beth says:

I ended up using one can of condensed cream of chicken, and adding a half of a can of water, in addition to the can of chicken broth and halfed the sour cream. Also added garlic, parsley and other herbs. It was good!

    Thanks!

Noodles don’t freeze well. I bet you could make everything except the noodles and freeze. Then add them when you cook/warm it up.

      1. Kristyn Merkley says:

Yes, I agree, Kassia. Thanks for sharing that 🙂

  502. RChat says:

if I omit the sour cream does it still taste as good? is there something I could substitute? We aren’t big sour cream people over here. thanks!

    1. Lisa Taylor says:

You can substitute cream cheese for sour cream.

      1. Kathleen C. says:

You could also use plain yogurt and much healthier than SC

I don’t like sour cream at all, but this is my new favorite dish! You just get the creamy, and the sour enhances the chicken flavor

      1. Kelly says:

I was going to ask if there was an alternative to Sour Cream because I don’t like it either. Maybe I will try it now because of you!

      2. Kristyn Merkley says:

I hope you will. It does add so much..for the better 🙂 Let me know what you think!

  503. Christy says:

All of these chicken recipes look soooo good. I usually get stuck in a rut and cook the same old chicken dishes. This will be a nice change the Chicken Tetrazzini looks divine and so easy. Thanks for sharing!

  504. michelle says:

II’ve never heard of tetrazzini but this looks amazing. When I googled tetrazzini i noticed that a more typical dish has wine…. Is there a reason you didn’t make it with wine or is it just as good without it?

    1. Kristi says:

Normally people substitute wine with chicken broth so since the recipe calls for chicken broth, I would think wine would not be necessary. Just my thoughts. Also, I’ve made this recipe and it is flavorful, creamy cheesy deliciousness! 🙂

      1. Kristyn Merkley says:

I personally haven’t tried with wine, but we love this, with the broth. You can totally try with wine.

This turned out so good, that my husband went back for seconds. This is definitely a keeper. Think I might add a vegetable in it next time.

    1. Lil' Luna says:

So glad the fam liked it!! I think Broccoli would be a great addition. Let me know what you end up doing next time. 😉

  508. Cali says:

Do u use big cans of cream of chicken. Or small?

    1. Lil' Luna says:

The smaller ones that are just over 10 ounces. 😉

I made this tonight as an unplanned meal scraping together what I had on hand. I cut the recipe in half and it filled an 8×8 dish, which was more than enough for our small family. I used 2 cups of rotisserie chicken from Costco, added fresh spinach, and used spaghetti noodles. I also only boiled the noodles long enough to make them able to mix and they finished cooking in the casserole since I detest soggy noodles and prefer al dente. It was delicious and passed the picky toddler test!

    1. Lil' Luna says:

I’m so happy to hear that, Molly!! Fresh Spinach would be a great addition – will have to try that next time I make this. 😉

  510. Betty says:

Going to give this a try tonight! Quick question… How did you prepare your chicken? Grilled, boiled, fried, etc?

    1. Lil' Luna says:

I usually grill or bake it in the oven. For the oven, I usually drizzle olive oil on it and some lemon pepper at 400 for about 30-40 minutes and then I cube or shred. If I’m smart enough and have time, I usually cook it in the crock pot. 😉

    2. Tracy says:

This is one of the recipes that my instant pot comes on real handy. It cooks frozen chicken breast in 30 minutes. Just like you would put them in the crock pot for 4-6 hours. It falls apart and will shred with just stirring with a large fork.

  511. Ashley says:

Hi 🙂 I’m making this tonight and am planning on using rotisserie chicken. I know it says 4 breasts, but 2 rotisserie chickens sounds like a lot. Would you use one or two chickens?

    1. Lil' Luna says:

I’d use one since 1 rotisserie chicken usually feeds about 4, which in mind is about 4 breasts. 😉

    2. Deborah says:

I’d use 1 rotisserie chicken but also include dark meat.

      1. Janet Lark says:

        5 stars
I love the dark meat poultry. I’m new to dentures so it’s so much easier to eat!

This recipe is a huge hit with my family. Even my super picky 6 year old! I’m making it tonight with garlic bread after he begged for “the yummy chicken Tetris stuff” 🙂

  514. sara says:

This may be a stupid question but is TB tablespoons? or what does it stand for, I have never seen tablespoon written like that (tbsp usually)

    1. Pammy says:

      5 stars
Hi, am making this tonight, as tetrazzini is my favorite dish. My only thought on the recipe as written is that chicken breasts come in all weights. How many ounces of chicken would you say you put in this dish? Thanks!!!! I also plan to mix the cheeses because there can never be too much cheese. xoxo

      1. Lil' Luna says:

How did it turn out? I’d say it’s about 24-30 ounces of chicken… depends on how much chicken you like. You could always add more or do less. 😉 And you can never go wrong adding more cheese. ;D

  515. Laura Schulz says:

What are the daily values for this recipe? Fat, carbs, fiber, protein?

  516. Tamara says:

Thanks for sharing! I am going to try this tonight. Is this dish really only baked at 300 degrees, or is that possibly a typo?

    1. Scott Kinder says:

350 for 40-45 in the written recipe. Came out perfect for me!

  517. Kathy Lundy says:

I made this tonight, just as the recipe states except my cream of chicken soup was cream of chicken with herbs (just happened to be what I had in the pantry). It is soooo good! Thank you so much! This is going into our regular dinner rotation!

    1. Lil' Luna says:

Thanks for stopping by! I’ve never tried the cream of chicken wth herbs, so I’ll have to try that next time. Thanks for the suggestion!

WE’VE HAD A SIMILAR RECIPE IN OUR FAMILY FOR YEARS, I USE 1 CAN of CREAM OF CHICKEN, AND One CAN OF Cream of muSHROOM. I ALSO ADD MUSHROOMS AND ON OCCASSION ONIONS FOR A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT TASTE. I now use less sour cream, Which is fat free, no sodium chicken broth, and fat free soup and cheese to cut back on calories. One of our Favorite dishes. You can totally modify to add or take out many ingredients to make it your own.

      4. Kristyn Merkley says:

Very true!! Thank you for sharing your changes! Sounds great!

Yummy!!!! Thanks for sharing!! I used pasta spirals instead of linguini, added 1/2 a raw cauliflower (finely chopped), used a little less butter, and sprinkled breadcrumbs on top with the cheese (I also didn’t bother using the alfoil as I wanted a nice, brown, crispy top).

Mmmmm!!!! It was so yummy that I claimed the leftovers and have been enjoying them these last couple of days. 😉

It is a simple and yet very tasty meal which I have just written up in my recipe collection. Thanks again!!!

  519. Anne says:

No veggies??, I remember growing up tetrazzini having veggies. In our house, it was peas and mushrooms. Weird combo but it worked. Can I suggest cooking pasta less then what it says on the box? If you cook it to done then bake for another hour, you will have mushy pasta. Any casserole that uses pasta and is baked, I cook 1-2 minutes less.

    1. Lil' Luna says:

That’s a great suggestion! I have never had that problem, but I could see how you could. And if you want veggies, feel free to add them. 😉

    2. Marci says:

      5 stars
I wondered the same thing about not completely cooking the pasta. I used fettuccine (didn’t have linguine on hand) which I cooked according to the package and then baked it in the casserole. It wasn’t mushy at all. Maybe because it is a little bigger than fettuccine? Great casserole. My family loved it!

    3. Genodra Leonard says:

I was thinking the same thing. I will add the veggies to mine. Thanks.

    4. Jo Phillips says:

If you want to add peas, use frozen and do not cook them first. They will be perfect! They are a great addition to the dish and so colorful.

Good point about cooking the pasta less. Traditionally it’s made with Peas and Mushrooms. I don’t like mushrooms but mine has the peas. I only have one suggestion…you can do without the sour cream but if you do, use a small amount. 2 cups is insane…more of a stroganoff. I recommend 1/2 cup. Bon Apetit, Chef Cosmo

      1. Kristyn Merkley says:

        Thanks for the suggestions!

we love this we add mushrooms and pimentos for a twist of flavor. My kids asked for peas in it not sure if that would taste yummy.

  521. Melody says:

Can this be frozen? If so, should I cook it first or get it ready to bake and then freeze?

    1. Lil' Luna says:

I’ve never freezed it but I’m sure you could get it all ready to cook and then the day off, take it out to let it unthaw and then cook the regular time. 😉

    2. Vikky Johnson says:

It should freeze well. Just defrost in the fridge and then bake. Because it has dairy in it the consistency may be a little different.

I’d add just a little extra sauce or just extra broth to it. Pasta is known to soak up liquid. I could be wrong. Just an idea. Extra sauce never hurts anything. 🙂

      1. Donna says:

        5 stars
If you cook the pasta until about a minute under al dente, it will finish cooking in the soup mixture in the oven, only absorbing what’s needed to finish cooking. That’s why I use Barilla pastas. It never overcooks or gets mushy. You shouldn’t need to add more liquid, at least, I wouldn’t.

One would think you could have figured out that this recipe isn’t super healthy from the start before you even decided to make it, simply based on the ingredients. Quickly googling the word “tetrazzini” will let you know that it’s not Italian, but rather American, and is typically presented just like this dish– basically, “creamy linguine with chicken” IS tetrazzini. I made this tonight and I thought it was easy and tasty– definitely not a health food, but a comfort food. It was anything but flavorless.

  527. Mary says:

so – lighten it up yourself! Fat free sour cream, fat free cream-of-whatever or reduced sodium versions or make your own versions, add in veggies and reduce the amount of cheese or use fat-free/reduced sodium or a combo of fat-free, reduced sodium and regular cheese. Don’t think it tastes great? Add other spices. I almost never use a recipe with the exact ingredients more than once or twice due to family preferences and a low-sodium diet.
    Cooking is fun!

I added Parmesan/Romano cheese, Italian seasoning, garlic powder and mushrooms. It was perfect! My husband has no sense of smell, so food is bland. He loved this! Just add some ‘extras’, if you like more seasoning : )

  529. Tanya says:

Can you make this in the crockpot?

  532. Linda lamb says:

Sometimes we just need comfort food.

  533. Lil' Luna says:

Totally agree – I always change things up too. 😉

  534. Becky says:

Sour cream for plain Greek yogurt maybe?

  535. Scott Kinder says:

Well said, Mary! The value of a recipe like this from Lil Luna is in part the basic amounts, cooking times, etc. I’m making this tonight and bought Health Recipe Cream of Chicken and Cream of Mushroom soups. I will gauge how much sour cream to add as I put it all together in a bowl. I considered adding chopped fresh broccoli, but decided it might crowd the 9×12 baking dish, so will slice it into wedges and steam or microwave it separately. Should make for a nice presentation I think. Thanks Lil Luna!!

Am about to try. Sounds wonderful & simple! I wish those who are concerned about FAT understood that it’s STARCHES that convert to sugar, which then converts to BAD FAT. The pasta itself is the concern. And anytime you read the words “low fat”, “reduced fat”, “NO OR ZERO FAT”, they can’t keep the flavor without the NATURAL FAT, so they just add SUGAR to compensate. As long as you don’t eat fat to an excess (so as not to increase your cholesterol), it’s better to consume WHOLE FAT since it doesn’t convert to bad fat. If you want to continue to eat starches try WHITE KIDNEY BEAN EXTRACT. I began taking it 2/25/21 and LOST 26 lbs. by mid April. 2 months of RELIGIOUSLY taking it and the weight literally shaved off the 2nd month. Bottom line, if you forget to take it, it doesn’t work. I always have some on my person in case I’m out and about. Potatoes, grits, ANY GRAIN, bread, pasta, rice, tortillas, etc. Pop 2 of them BEFORE my starchy meal and I’m done. Eat all of the natural fat I want and still lost 28 lbs in 2 months. And it’s cheap on Amazon. Best! 😊

  537. Lil' Luna says:

Thanks Beck! Hopefully, that helps anyone with questions about that! I love Asiago! Great suggestion:)

    Hi Kristyn,

I came out great – I used about 1/2 of sour cream in the recipe and about a handful of the mozzerella – just enough to cover it. Along with the Parmesan, I sprinkled a couple TBS of Italian bread crumbs. Even with the smaller amounts, there wouldn’t have been any room for veggies. Oh, and I used a couple 9 oz packages of cooked sliced chicken breast (Perdue I think). Thanks for the excellent recipe which will become a regular in the rotation!
