Christmas in a Can

Hi everyone! I’m excited to be here as a part of this FUN series.

{Kristyn has all the good ideas, doesn’t she?}

I’m Stephanie from Somewhat Simple and Kristyn has asked that I share a Christmas idea with you today, but first I have to answer the following 5 questions, so here goes nothing!

1 – What is your favorite holiday and why?

Christmas, hands down! I loved it as a kid and I love it even more as a mom. The Christmas season is my favorite time of year- the weather is crisp and cool, Christmas Carols make me happy, and it’s the only time of year I can go shopping everyday and my husband doesn’t raise an eyebrow! (Or, at least when he does raise an eyebrow I can say, “It’s for Christmas” … and the conversation ends right there- usually!)

2 – What is your favorite Christmas Tradition?

The first Monday after Thanksgiving is our “Christmas Kick-Off”, though we’ve never really had a name for it! We take the kids out to dinner and then we head out to find the perfect tree. We usually get home kind of late, and the kids will have school the next morning, but we stay up a bit past bedtime anyway, turn on some Christmas music and decorate our tree and our living room. It is the beginning of Christmas for us, and the kids look forward to this night almost as much as I do!

3 – What is your all-time favorite Christmas Movie?

It is a tie between the animated cartoons Frosty the Snowman and ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. Mostly because these are just nostalgic for me- I loved them as a kid! A more recent one I have come to love is Shrek the Halls- my family loves that one!

4 – What has been the best present you’ve ever received and why?

6 years ago we found out on Christmas Eve I was pregnant with my daughter. We struggled with infertility and I even had a miscarriage earlier that year- so this was by far the best present ever!

5 – Why do you blog?

{I ask myself this question all the time!!! HA HA!} I didn’t start a blog to get rich and famous, I started it to document my life as a wife and mom of little kids- the afternoons we spent creating something, the yummy meals my husband couldn’t stop talking about, the routines that worked, the decor that made me smile… it was my online journal for anyone who wanted to see it, but it was mostly just for me. Since that time, my readership has grown, advertisers have seen my potential and I have made a lot of friends in the process, something I wouldn’t trade for anything! It definitely is time consuming, and I find myself re-evaluating my priorities and rededicating myself to what is most important in my life all.the.time. But I do enjoy growing my creative talents and I love the chance it gives me to interact and inspire others.

So now that you know just a little bit about me, I’d like to share a fun idea my family did last Christmas:

One of my readers left me a comment mentioning a fun activity her family does each year.

Each year take a walk (or drive) around your neighborhood and vote for the house with the best Christmas decorations- choose a top 3 or 5 or 10 or just your absolute favorite.

Then, leave treats on their doorstep telling them how much you appreciate their decorations!

Simply fun and thoughtful!

I liked this idea so much, I decided it would become a new tradition for my family!

Last year my family dropped off these:

Making them is as easy as 1-2-3:

Purchase a can at your grocery store with a pop-top. Open the BOTTOM of the can with a can opener & empty the contents. Wash the can really good and dry it completely.

Fill the can with treats then seal it up by adding some hot glue to the rim.

Embellish the heck out of it! Cover it with cute paper, add some ribbon, buttons etc. Include a short note of appreciation and a tag telling them to open it.

And that’s it!

I’d love for you to visit Somewhat Simple for even more creative inspiration for your home and family.

Thanks for having me Kristyn!

So cute and simple – I LOVE it!! What a great idea, Steph! Can’t wait to start this tradition with my little family this year.

ENJOY!

This is such an amazing idea. My boyfriend is going to be deploying next week and will be in over seas during Christmas so this would really be neat to send to him. I obviously will not be able to use Chocolate but candy will work. Thanks for this wonderful idea!

Howdy! This is my first comment here so I just wanted to give a quick shout out and say I genuinely enjoy reading through your articles. Can you suggest any other blogs/websites/forums that cover the same topics? Thanks a lot!

I really love everything about this idea. The Christmas can idea is really cute, and I love the tradition of leaving treats on someones doorstep – the world should be full of more random acts of kindness!
