SNAP Recap 2012

Where do I even begin? I’ve been home from SNAP for a few days and have had a hard time trying to write up the wonderful experience I had last weekend. I’m warning you now – this will be a LONG post. :)

Let’s begin…

SNAP was put on by these lovely ladies:

{Pic courtesy of Kristen Duke Photography}

These women are all SOOO amazing, and it was wonderful being able to rub shoulders with them, learn from them and be inspired by them. They are all so wonderful and I’m so glad that I can call them friends. They were able to put on such a wonderful conference that allowed me and so many others to be inspired and be able to meet other like-minded people in blog land. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! Love you all!!

On to the VENUE….

SNAP took place at Thanksgiving Point in UT. The place was absolutely beautiful and made the perfect setting for the event. The Tulip Festival was going on at the same time, and you can see below just a small glimpse of what we were surrounded by all weekend – PURE BEAUTY!!

Seriously, gorgeous, right?!

This venue provided the perfect opportunity to be inspired and learn so much!

Before I share a few things I learned, I wanted to just gush about how awesome the ladies above did. They fed us, taught us, and made everything so fun!!

We got to shop at the Queen Bee Market, which was put on by my good friend, Mique, from Thirty Handmade Days (way to go, Mique – it was awesome!!)

They had some awesome vendors and almost too many cute things to look at. LOVED it all! It was fun to even meet some readers who didn’t attend SNAP but came to the market to shop (yes, that means you, Marissa!!) It was also fun meeting the awesome ladies at Social Fabric (so great meeting you Kim & Mel!!)

FROM LEFT TO RIGHT – Nikki, Ashley, Rach, Kristy, Andrea (my other roomie and contributor who I ADORE!! Love you, girl!) & Kelli

We ate good food! Seriously – it was really good and way better than I expected. Not that I expected it to be bad, but it was REALLY good!

We got to learn from some amazing women! We laughed, we cried, we wrote down every word said – we did all sorts of things and were definitely inspired and touched by those we were able to hear from!! Thank you to all the speakers for the words of inspiration! :)

JUST A FEW BLOGGER TIPS/NOTES FROM MY CLASSES INCLUDE:

- Learn Google Webmaster Central – it’s a great tool!

- Make sure you are backing up your site on a regular basis – look for plug-ins that do this.

- Figure out what your goals are for your site – would you like it be a business? looking only for feedback?

- Learn SOCIAL MEDIA – it’s huge and can help you network!

- Own it!! Consider your blog a performance!

- BE ORIGINAL!!!

:)

We also got to shake our groove thing Saturday night, which was a blast!! {and it was a nice way to burn off the extra calories that we ate all weekend!!} LOL!

Seriously, though – Friends + Food + Fun + Inspiration {& more} = AWESOME BLOG CONFERENCE!!!

So, let me share with you the most important things I learned this weekend….

1. It’s important to MAKE FRIENDS!

Life can get lonely sometimes and it’s so wonderful to have friends to call on during those times of need. I am so grateful that my blog friends have become some of my best in-real-life friends. And I’m even happier that I was able to make even more friends this weekend. I mean, seriously, it makes me want to tear up, but I LOVE the ladies I was able to spend time with this weekend. I know this sounds dumb, but I want to be friends with everyone and I found myself wanting to slow down time so that I could meet every single person and get to know them on a one-on-one basis. Instead, I was a social butterfly all weekend yapping to as many people possible, and although I didn’t get to chat with everyone I wanted to I am so glad I got out of my shell and met as many people as I did {which, btw, wasn’t easy, but I knew I would regret it if I didn’t!!}.

Here are some of my friends {new and old}….

Let me begin with my AZ peeps…

FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: Kristy, Jamielyn, Me, Katie and Kelli – I love, love, love these girls. Not only did we get to go to this conference together but we all live pretty close, I’m talking like 4 of us within 2 miles of each other (except Jamielyn – not for long, right, girl?) and get together for play groups and other fun activities. Jealous, right? You should be! So glad that we have an awesome bloggers community in AZ!! Thanks for the pic, Katie!! Sad we couldn’t get Steph and Kristi in here!!

TOP LEFT: Lorie (from Be Different, Act Normal) and I. We had emailed and been in touch a few times but not much. SO glad we were able to spend some time together this weekend. LOVE her!!!

TOP RIGHT: Char (from Crap I’ve Made) and I. What can I say about Char other than the fact that I love her guts?! The lady is honest and funny and just pure awesome!! Thanks for fitting me in the car, Char!! XO

BOTTOM LEFT: McKenzie (from Girl Loves Glam) and I. This girl is adorable! Didn’t know her at all beforehand and just fell in love with her!

BOTTOM RIGHT: Nikki (from Chef in Training) and I. Nikki was one of my roomies. We had emailed, text and chatted on the phone but had never met until SNAP. This girl is amazing and so stinkin’ sweet!! Thanks for sleeping with me, Nikki! ;)

TOP LEFT: 2 of the 4 beautiful sisters from The Letter 4. Seriously – these girls are MODELS!! They are tall, skinny, beautiful and super trendy. I had no correspondence with them before SNAP and was so excited to become friends, although I didn’t want to be stuck standing next to them for too long cuz they are way too pretty and they made me look super frumpy – LOL! ;)

TOP RIGHT: Janae, Me and Jamie.

BOTTOM: Janae, Kelli, me and Jamie. LOVE these cute girls!!!

TOP LEFT: Heather (from Whipperberry) and I. I love this girl! We became friends earlier this year at CHA and that’s where I first fell in love with her. She is so fun and seriously so talented. I still can’t get over how beautiful she makes everything look. Heather – you’re a rock star!

TOP RIGHT: Kami (from No Biggie), me and Cindy (Skip to My Lou). LOVE, LOVE, LOVE both these ladies. They are so talented and so nice, and I have loved getting to know them better, first at CHA and last week at SNAP. I look up to both so much! And Kami – so sorry you had to see me in action with ya know who. ;)

BOTTOM LEFT: Melissa (from The Polka Dot Chair) and I. She’s one of my blog crushes. I’ve been reading her site for a long time and have loved ALL of her creations. When I saw she was going to SNAP she was on the “MUST MEET” list. So glad I got to know her a little better cuz she’s an absolute doll! I didn’t expect her to know who I was, and she didn’t. But, guess what? She does now and I couldn’t be happier! Love her!

BOTTOM RIGHT: Me, Tam (from Sew Dang Cute) and Brooke (from the Crafting Chicks). Tam was one of my roomies, but we hadn’t met before SNAP. We had emailed, were friends on FB but didn’t really KNOW each other. So glad I got to know her cuz she’s flippin’ awesome!!! I met Brooke Friday night. I heard some awesome jams coming from one hotel room and I thought to myself, “I don’t even know who’s in there but they are playing fun music, so they’re probably fun.” I decided to knock on the door (totally awkward but didn’t care cuz I wanted to meet whoever was in there) and it was where The Crafting Chicks were party-ing. I already loved the Crafting Chicks, but let’s just say I fell in love with these girls even more! They are SOOO HILARIOUS!!! They put on a little show for me, which I’m dying to get the footage of (Stacy – any way I can pay you to send that to me?) ;)

LEFT: Me, Alison (from Oopsey Daisy) and Kelli. Have I told you how much I love Alison? She has guest posted for me a few times and has been a great blog buddy for awhile now. We had only met once before but was glad I could see her this past weekend. She is as cute in real life as she is on her blog!!

RIGHT: Me and Kristen (from Kristen Duke Photography). Not only does this girl have a great name but she has a great personality! She was so fun and was so happy to be there and you could see that in her!! I LOVED that! I really loved getting to know her and so glad that I can call her an IRL friend, now. :)

FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: Kelli, Jamie, Jen, Jodie and Me – Let me pause…. The Girls at Eighteen25. I think everyone and their mother can say how much they love their stuff. This pic was the first day and Kelli and I literally attacked them we were so excited to meet them!! I’m sure they thought we were crazy (still do) but I’m happy to say that although this pic was taken as strangers, we were friends in the end. These girls are just awesome and I’m so glad we got to hang out with them and get to know them better. Jamie, Jen, Jodie – let’s Skype, aight?? ;)

See?? Told you we were friends. ;) Hanging out at JCW’s….

TOP LEFT: Becca (from Blue Cricket Design), Steph (from Somewhat Simple), and me. It’s sad that I barely saw these girls the entire time, but it was because they were socializing just as much as I was!! Can I just say how much I love them and that they’re both hilarious, especially together!! Becca – come visit more!! :D

TOP RIGHT: Shelley (from House of smiths) and Beckie (from Infarrantly Creative). ADORE these ladies!! These girls are both so stinkin’ funny and talented. They are a wealth of knowledge and I’m so glad I was able to learn and be inspired by them this weekend. And so glad we got to get jiggy wit’ it together on the dance floor Saturday night!

BOTTOM LEFT: Mandi (from Vintage Revivals) and myself. This girl is AWESOME!! We had never met before but I’ve been a long-time admirer. She is so talented and is so confident in her style and creativity, and I love that so much about her! Mandi – you are the bomb.com, girl!

BOTTOM RIGHT: Kari (from Newlyweds on a Budget), Shelley and myself. I had just met Kari for the first time and instantly loved this girl – she was so nice and was so fun to get to know!! Kari – you are adorable!!

FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: Ashley, me and Rachel. I just adore these girls!! We have had LOADS of email contact, text, etc and this was the first time I met them. As you can see here they are just completely adorable!! I wish I could just scoop them up from Ohio and bring them back to be my neighbors here in AZ. Seriously, girls… when your hubbies are done with school, move by me, mmm ‘k? :)

LEFT: Kristy, Kelli and me – My partners in crime. Did you know we all live within one mile of each other? Scary, huh? I was able to spend so much time with these girls and if you know them at all, you’d know that they made the trip a TON more fun! Love you, girls! :D

RIGHT: Jamielyn and I – isn’t this girl adorable?! I couldn’t stand by her too long either because she always wore the cutest outfits and like the Letter 4 girls made me look frumpy. LOL!! JK, JK :)

Lots of bloggers. Lots of friends. Lots of awesome ladies. I was in heaven.

Although it can be awkward and sometimes hard to get out of your shell, I would highly recommend doing it because it’s then that you can meet some of the most amazing people and become friends with them. :)

2. BLOGGING IS SUPPOSE TO BE FUN!

I know blogging can sometimes be overwhelming, but in the end, it’s suppose to be fun! Something I learned this week was that if things aren’t fun or enjoyable any more, maybe it’s time to take a new direction. If that means less sponsored posts or more original content or whatever – I think it may be time to take a step back and re-evaluate. I went into the conference just as happy as can be, but even found myself wanting to take a new direction with the blog. It seemed like my readers wanted to know me even more, so I think I will be doing more personal/mommy content than before. No worries – I’m not trying to be a mommy or lifestyle blogger, I just want you guys to know the real me. :)

And having said that, I want you to see how FUN blogging {or bloggers} can be…

Kim (from Today’s Creative Blog). Just look at these pics… the lady is awesome!! She’s down-to-earth and so fun to hang around with. So glad I got to talk to her and learn from her this weekend. :)

Tam and I… I know – we’re nerds but what can I say? I {heart} the girl!! Sure, we may look possessed in the pic on the right, but we’re really quite normal – kinda. :)

FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: Amy, me, Katie, Kristy and Kelli – It was SOO great to finally meet Amy from Mod Podge Rocks. She was one of the first bloggers to reach out to me and have me guest post. She is so nice and so helpful with blog-related items AND so fun!! This pic was for our friend Marni, back home. We were thinking of you Miss Sassy Sites – you better come next year!!

TOP LEFT: Jamielyn and I – having too much fun!

TOP RIGHT: Kelli showing us her lovely breakfast. Yummy!

BOTTOM LEFT: Steph and I striking a pose.

BOTTOM RIGHT: TOP – Michelle, Tam & Kelli; MIDDLE – Brooke and I; BOTTOM – Heidi – ALL awesome ladies!! Sad I didn’t get more pics with Michelle or Heidi cuz those girls are super awesome!!

In reality, I’m bummed I didn’t get pics with EVERYONE!! I know there are so many I missed, and I apologize!! :(

And last but not least….

3. It’s important to just BE YOU!!!

{We were all given this necklace since it was the theme of the conference}

I think there are a TON of low confidence and self-esteem issues in the blogosphere. Everyone is comparing themselves to everyone else and it’s causing some major issues.  If people could start focusing on themself and their own blog and content, then there wouldn’t be so many problems. I can promise you now that if you were confident in yourself and your blog, you would be happy and it would show. There were a lot of speakers at SNAP who talked about this, and I think the reason they talked about it was because of how prevalent it is. And to be honest, it makes me sad!  I just want everyone to be happy and for everyone to be confident in their own style and creativity. I know I’m trying to do that and have found myself happier as well as happier for the success of others when I’m not focusing on trying to be like others. :)

I saw this button on a badge at SNAP and loved it. And you want to know why? Because I truly believe everyone is “Kinda a big deal at Snap!!” Everyone is important. I think it’s just a matter of making sure each person feels that way about themself too. :)

Just Be You!! I really don’t think it’s possible to find true happiness if you’re doing anything else. :)

Thanks again to everyone who helped make SNAP a possibility and for the important lessons learned last week!! Just a re-cap:

1. It’s important to MAKE FRIENDS!

2. BLOGGING IS SUPPOSE TO BE FUN!

3. It’s important to just BE YOU!!!

ENJOY!

So glad you ended up coming and that you could still be back in time for Dutch’s arrival!! I think it was meant to be. :) Love ya, girl! XO

  3. 5

Oh freak. You realize that I love your stinkin’ guts…….yes? This was for sure one of my favie wrap-ups. I was so absent from all the fun this year. Being in charge stinks like dirty diapers. As long as you know I love you. We’re good. And when I come to AZ this summer….there better be an AZ girls party and group trip to Sprinkles. ‘Nuf Said.

Thanks so much for sharing what you learned. I especially liked the last one. It’s something I’m working hard at…. is that weird that I have to work at being myself? :)
Glad you had a great time. Wish I could’ve been there. Posts like these help me live vicariously…..
By the way, I love your (fairly) new blog design- it’s so bright and cheery!
    Have a great week-

    • 8

Thank you for the kind words, Valerie! So glad you like the design! And no, it’s not weird that you have to work at being yourself. I think all women do that!! I think there are just so many people to look up to and you want to take all the good qualities you see in others and have them yourself! It’s just impossible to be the best at everything and I think that’s what we do and we set ourselves up for disappointment. I think we need to be easier on ourselves and practice being our best self…. if any of that makes sense – LOL! XO

Oh boy, this post is FULL of so much fun stuff! I can’t believe i was lucky enough to be there!!! Kristyn, you were SO MUCH FUN. You totally were a huge part of the reason I even wanted to come to SNAP. You have such a passion and talent for making friends and helping others. For anyone reading this- I was so touched by Kristyn, because she took me under her wing and introduced me to every single person she knows. It was fun to be introduced as her “Sewing Contributor.” I’m so happy we are now official friends in real life, although it feels like its been like that for a long time now. Me and Ash miss you! :)
question: what is in Kelli’s mouth? lol!!!!

I wish that Snap happened every month. I made real friends! Before I went to Snap, my husband asked me what I was most excited about and I told him I was excited to “network”, he gave me the best advice. He said, don’t worry about networking and just make friends! These ladies are all just like you! I really had no idea what to expect and I was so happy to find that he was totally right! I miss everyone so much! We all need to have a big, fat, Skype session!

    • 15

Your hubby is right! It’s so good to network, but making friends is what’s most important! It really is something special to create bonds with the women that you know “get you” and who are creative like you. I hope you had a great experience and I hope we get to hang out more next year!!! So glad I got to know you! XO

  9. 16

Wow what a recap Kristyn!! Thanks so much for including QBM in this post. My one and only regret from this weekend is that i was so busy with QBM stuff that I didn’t really get to hang out too much with anyone. I would’ve loved to spend more time with you…..next time?? Love ya! xoxoxoxo

  16. 30

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! It makes me definitely want to go to the conference next year! And the advice is really great. My blog is still fairly new and small, and its really making me take a look at the direction I want things to go. Thanks again!

    • 31

You’re welcome, Katie!! I think it would be a great goal to go next year. Conferences like these really provide a great opportunity to “get out there” and to meet so many people and make friends. Let me know if you will be going so that we can meet each other next year!

  17. 32

I know I keep saying it, but I’m way bummed we didn’t connect again after that first day. What the?!?!? Might have had something to do with a certain five month old baby who really cramped my style all weekend long. Next year, right? Maybe I’ll get lucky and get to come to AZ sometime. :) I DO have family down there after all. And I agree with Becca – just go ahead and make a trip up here, mmkay?

I love your take on the whole thing! It was so great to spend some quality crazy girls in the hotel time. I wish I would have taken more pics. Love the one of us. Totally fun! I may have to steal it.
